Mayer, Richard E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1978
This research investigates whether subjects who receive the premises for a linear ordering in story format acquire a different memory structure and use a different solution algorithm than subjects who receive the same premises in equation format. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Cognitive Processes, Experimental Psychology, Experiments
Weaver, George E.; Stanny, Claudia J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1978
In four experiments, immediate memory for sets of five sequentially presented pictorial stimuli was assessed by a two-alternative, forced-choice recognition probe. Suggests that immediate memory for pictures is determined by variables that increase or decrease processing demands, as is the case for verbal material. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Memory, Pictorial Stimuli
Peer reviewedEllsworth, Phoebe C.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 1978
Attempts to discover whether direct gaze is seen as facilitating social comparison and if the relationship between direct gaze and liking is reversed when the subject is motivated to avoid social comparison. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Cues, Interaction Process Analysis, Psychological Patterns, Psychological Studies
Peer reviewedSpellacy, Frank – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1977
To the extent that brain dysfunction is present in violence-prone groups, one may expect that assessment of simple perceptual and cognitive abilities may facilitate significantly the detection of subjects prone to violent behavior. This research examines the ability of neuropsychological tests to discriminate between violent and nonviolent…
Descriptors: Adolescents, Behavior Patterns, Clinical Psychology, Measurement Instruments
Peer reviewedAnderson, Brent L. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1977
By assessing the competitive performance of schizophrenics on different types of tasks and by using nonschizophrenic groups, an attempt was made to determine more accurately whether schizophrenics respond differently to competition than nonschizophrenics, and if the effects of competition tend to be task-specific with schizophrenics. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Clinical Psychology, Competition, Interpersonal Competence, Interpersonal Relationship
Peer reviewedSappington, A. A. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1977
Induced Anxiety is a brief psychotherapy procedure that teaches individuals to cope with negative effect by using relaxation techniques. This research investigated the role of physiological arousal in the affect induction phase of Induced Anxiety therapy by using biofeedback to facilitate arousal. Twenty-one college students suffering from…

Peer reviewedDillbeck, Michael C. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1977
Two weeks of twice-daily practice of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique was compared with 2 weeks of twice-daily practice of passive relaxation as a means of reduction of anxiety, as measured by the Trait scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. (Editor)
Descriptors: Anxiety, Clinical Psychology, College Students, Hypothesis Testing
Peer reviewedSussman, Stephen Allan – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1977
This research is an extension of earlier studies in which the experience of the body and the body image are conceptualized as an index of the way in which a person structures his relationships with others, how open or free he can be with others, or how disclosing he can be with others. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Body Image, Clinical Psychology, Hypothesis Testing, Interpersonal Competence
Peer reviewedWalstedt, Joyce Jennings – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1977
The altrustic other orientation (AOO) is used to examine self-sacrifice in women originating in the male-female relationship. The hypothesis that women who do not accept the altrustic other orientation are more likely to be self-supporting in middle years and attain more academic degrees than those who do was confirmed. (Author)
Descriptors: Altruism, Attitude Measures, Attitudes, Females
Peer reviewedNoyes, Russell, Jr.; Kletti, Roy – Omega: Journal of Death and Dying, 1977
Accounts from 205 persons who had encountered life-threatening danger were analyzed and among them 60 were found that included descriptions of panoramic memory. It involved vivid recall of significant past experiences often spanning a lifetime. This brief, life review appeared meaningful in terms of a perceived threat to life. (Author)
Descriptors: Accidents, Cognitive Processes, Death, Early Experience
Cravens, Hamilton – Intellect, 1977
Recent work in the history of the sciences of man suggests that evolution's impact has been more pervasive in American culture since 1900 than it was before. Discusses the new evolutionists who succeeded the Social Darwinists after 1900 and their contributions to American culture. (Author/RK)

Peer reviewedNeely, James H. – American Journal of Psychology, 1977
Examines, within a single experiment, whether the conditions exist for drawing a valid inference about the possibility of a word losing its meaning through either visual satiation or visual "and" verbal satiation. Evaluates research by Fillenbaum (1964) and Esposito and Pelton (1969). (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Alphabets, Decision Making, Information Processing, Psychological Studies
Peer reviewedEvans, James D. – American Journal of Psychology, 1977
Investigates what type of study (information processing) is sufficient for transfer of information to long-term memory and demonstrates that the influence of a fixed set of study instructions on long-term recall may vary as a function of the locus of the time available to study a list for prior short-term recall. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Information Processing, Memorization, Memory, Psychological Studies
Baddeley, A. D.; Patterson, K. E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977

Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Information Processing, Memory
Peer reviewedSanders, Glenn S.; Baron, Robert S. – Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 1977
After 15 years of research on group induced shifts in individual choice, two hypotheses, social comparison (involving image maintenance) and persuasive arguments (involving attitude change), have emerged as the leading explanatory contenders.
