Peer reviewedMonsen, Randall B. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1979
Monosyllables were recorded from a group of 24 hearing-impaired and six normal-hearing children between three and six years of age. (Author)

Peer reviewedStrand, Edythe A.; McNeil, Malcolm R. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1996
A study was conducted of five individuals exhibiting acquired apraxia of speech to examine vowel durations and length of intervals between words produced in utterances that varied in type of utterance as well as in length. Results found evidence that longer vowel durations were a salient characteristic of apraxia of speech. (CR)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Adults, Speech Impairments, Speech Skills
Peer reviewedTaylor, Bernard – Physics Education, 2003
Describes how to make a string radio for a lesson on sound and string telephones. (NB)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Physics, Science Activities, Science Instruction
Peer reviewedLapp, David R. – Physics Education, 2003
Explains how to use the equation for frequency of vibration of a transversely oscillating bar or pipe with both ends free to vibrate to build a simple and inexpensive xylophone from a 3-meter section of copper pipe. The instrument produces a full major scale and can be used to investigate various musical intervals. (Author/NB)
Descriptors: Acoustics, Musical Instruments, Physics, Science Activities
Fickes, Michael – School Planning & Management, 2003
Describes acoustical products and techniques that schools are using to keep distracting noise out of the classroom and to amplify useful classroom sound. (EV)
Descriptors: Acoustic Insulation, Acoustical Environment, Classroom Design, Classroom Environment
Peer reviewedSintonen, Sara – Lifelong Learning in Europe, 2003
Culture is becoming increasingly multimodal. The most effective form of intellectual and aesthetic development should embrace both production and reception across all contexts. The goal of media education should be the ability to make critical choices regarding multimedia. (Contains 16 references.) (SK)

Peer reviewedPrins, David; Hubbard, Carol P. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1990
The study found no significant trends in the change of acoustical durations of stutter- and disfluency-free speech from readings in an adaptation series with four adapting, four nonadapting, and four nonstuttering subjects (all young adults). Findings suggest that adaptation of stuttering and other fluency-inducing conditions are a result of…

Peer reviewedGreenslade, Thomas B., Jr. – Physics Teacher, 1996
Presents experiments that use Helmholtz resonators and have been designed for a sophomore-level course in oscillations and waves. Discusses the theory of the Helmholtz resonator and resonance curves. (JRH)
