Capell, Frank J.; Quellmalz, Edys S. – 1980
In the area of large scale assessment, there is increasing interest in the measurement of students' written performance. At issue is whether the task demands in writing assessment can be simplified to involve the production of paragraph-length writing samples and/or multiple choice testing, rather than full-length essays. This study considers data…

Koch, Bill R.; Reckase, Mark D. – 1978
A live tailored testing study was conducted to compare the results of using either the one-parameter logistic model or the three-parameter logistic model to measure the performance of college students on multiple choice vocabulary items. The results of the study showed the three-parameter tailored testing procedure to be superior to the…

Fox, Robert A. – 1979
A well developed multiple choice test is a reliable instrument for grading students and evaluating teacher presentation. There are three steps in the development of a valid multiple choice examination: 1) design or "blueprinting," 2) item construction, and 3) item analysis and evaluation. "Blueprinting" is the identification of the types of…

Cross, Lawrence H.; And Others – 1980
A new scoring procedure for multiple choice tests attempts to assess partial knowledge and to restrict guessing. It is a variant of Coombs' elimination scoring method, adapted for use with the carbon-shield answer sheets commonly used with answer-until-correct scoring. Examinees are directed to erase the carbon shields of choices they are certain…

Schmidt, Norma G.
The purpose of this study was to develop a valid, reliable test to measure the knowledge of elementary school teachers about venereal disease. Recommended scientific test construction procedures were carefully followed. These included the development of a content outline and a table of specification; submitting potential test items to a review…

Frary, Robert B.; Lowry, Stephen R. – 1976
This paper presents theory concerning the relationships between reliability, misinformation and item discrimination coefficients. It is shown that, to the extent that misinformation rather than ignorance causes examinees to miss multiple-choice items, higher item discrimination coefficients and lower difficulty indices may be expected. Data were…

Hanna, Gerald S. – 1974
It was theorized that an answer-until-correct procedure, whereby an examinee marks responses to each multiple-choice question until feedback indicates that the correct answer has been marked, would yield scores of greater reliability and validity than conventional number-right procedure. Two papers and an application exercise for an undergraduate…

Boldt, Robert F. – 1971
This paper presents the development of scoring functions for use in conjunction with standard multiple-choice items. In addition to the usual indication of the correct alternative, the examinee is to indicate his personal probability of the correctness of his response. Both linear and quadratic polynomial scoring functions are examined for…

Harke, Douglas James – 1969
Each physics problem used in evaluating the effectiveness of Randomized Multiple Choice (RMC) tests was stated in the conventional manner and was followed by several multiple choice items corresponding to the steps in a written solution but presented in random order. Students were instructed to prepare a written answer and to use it to answer the…

Frary, Robert B.; Tideman, T. Nicolaus – 1976
The development of an index reflecting the probability that the observed correspondence between multiple choice test responses of two examinees was due to chance in the absence of copying was previously reported. The present paper reports the implementation of a statistic requiring less restrictive underlying assumptions but more computation time…

Andrew, Barbara J.; Hecht, James T. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
Results suggest that different groups of judges do set similar examination standards when using the same procedure, and that the average of individual judgments does not differ significantly from group consensus judgments. Significant differences were found, however, between the standards set by the two procedures employed. (RC)
