Brent, George – 1973
This module cluster developed for the Camden Teacher Crops project is intended to enable students to improve their teaching abilities in arithmetic. Emphasis is placed on how to teach rather than on what to teach. The following modules are included in this document: a) Arithmetic Resource Materials--On Hand; b) Long Term (4-6 Weeks) Arithmetic…

Eisenberg, Theodore A. – 1974
A diagnostic computational test given to 22 arithmetic teachers in 1930 was administered to a similar group of 35 elementary school teachers in 1973. The purpose was to compare and contrast computational errors made by the teachers. Findings revealed that 1973 teachers possess, on the average, more computational skills than the 1930 teachers. Both…

Harvill, Leo M. – 1971
This absolute scale contains nine times, each of which consists of a 100 millimeter vertical line with small division marks every 25 millimeters with the words "high" at the top and "low" at the bottom of the line. Above each of the vertical lines is a word or phrase. For the second grade scale these words are: arithmetic, counting, adding,…

Harvill, Leo M. – 1971
This second grade scale contains ten items related to arithmetic and one item related to each of the following topics: reading, art, and playing. The third grade scale, which is not included, follows a similar format although the items do differ somewhat in content. Each question is followed by five boxes of succeedingly smaller size. The child…

Wyks, Hollis W.; Austin, Robert J. – 1971
This is the first workbook-text in a two-part series written for deaf students. It is remedial in nature, aimed at the secondary level, and covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers. The use of the number 10 in explaining the concepts presented is stressed throughout. For the second workbook, see SE 015 828, and…
Descriptors: Algorithms, Arithmetic, Deafness, Instructional Materials
Werstler, Richard E. – 1972
This workbook for elementary teachers presents basic definitions and examples in the areas of set theory, numeration systems, fundamental operations and geometry. Text organization does not use programming frames. Answers to examples are included in a separate section. (DT)

CORLE, CLYDE G.; COULTER, MYRON L. – 1964
AN INVESTIGATION WAS MADE TO DETERMINE WHETHER STUDENTS WHO RECEIVED SPECIFIC ASSISTANCE WITH READING SKILLS IN ARITHMETIC SHOWED SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN THEIR READING AND ARITHMETIC WHEN COMPARED WITH A SIMILAR GROUP WHO DID NOT RECEIVE SUCH ASSISTANCE. FIFTEEN SCHOOLS WERE SELECTED FROM APPROXIMATELY 70 MEMBER SCHOOL DISTRICTS OF THE…

Nighswander, James K.; Beggs, Donald L. – 1971
A physiological measure, which does not possess the limitations of traditional self-report measures of test anxiety, was used to measure arousal during a simulated achievement testing situation. A sample of 119 fifth and sixth grade students ranked four academic subjects (arithmetic, language arts, social studies, and science) from "most…

Hale, Robert L. – Psychology in the Schools, 1978
Study investigated efficacy of predicting academic achievement as measured by the WRAT, using Verbal and Performance scores of WISC-R as predictors. Both tests were given to 155 children referred for psychological evaluations. Performance IQ did not significantly predict academic achievement, and Verbal IQ significantly predicted only Reading and…

Hitch, Graham J. – Cognitive Psychology, 1978
Two simple quantitative models were derived from a series of experiments which explored the role of information storage in working memory when performing mental arithmetic. The decay model is a tractable analysis of a complex task which assumes a decay process in working storage. Similar analyses are recommended for problem solving activities…

Dienes, Zoltan P. – Literacy Discussion, 1977
Discusses the principle elements for understanding and using mathematics, particularly arithmetic. Three aspects of arithmetic are considered: Understanding the concepts underlying a mathematical process, techniques or algorithms of arithmetic, and applications of the techniques to real situations. (SH)

Ginther, John L. – School Science and Mathematics, 1978
The author presents two activities for practice with numbers and calculation. The first is an arithmetic adaptation of the familiar game of "Concentration" while the second is an unusual representation of addition, subtraction, and some properties of negative numbers. (Author/MN)

Brown, Margaret; Kuchemann, Dietmar – Mathematics in School, 1977
Children between the ages of 10 and 13 were asked to write stories to accompany five computational problems. Stories were scored for suitability and it was found that students were most successful on subtraction and least successful on multiplication stories. Scores on this test correlated with mathematics achievement scores. (SD)

Fleischner, Jeannette E.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1987
The article details a process to develop and test an instructional program designed to teach learning disabled students the procedural, process, and task specific knowledge necessary to solve four kinds of arithmetic story problems. Single subject and group research designs were used to evaluate the problem solving unit. (Author/DB)

Brown, Anne L.; Campione, Joseph C. – American Psychologist, 1986
The following two changes in conceptualizing learning difficulties are occurring: (1) a shift from identifying deficits to focusing on assessing knowledge and (2) the use of diagnoses that are more dynamic and domain specific. This article illustrates how these changes relate to knowledge of the learning process and to better instruction.…
