Anderson, O. Roger – Amer Biol Teacher, 1970
Reviews research into the composition and structure of cell membranes. Describes four experiments, suitable for high school students, on the role of lipids in regulating diffusion across cell boundaries. Gives purpose and procedures for each experiment, laboratory data sheets, and the results of classroom trials of the experiments. (EB)

LeFave, Michael Keith; Neufeld, Richard W.J. – Journal of Research in Personality, 1980
Signal-Detection theory was applied to analysis of automatic data. In one experiment, anxiety surrounding auditory signals was induced; in the other, signals were administered to a psychometrically anxious group. Subjects in both experiments had enhanced automatic activity. (Author/CS)

Forrester, Tom – Physiologist, 1979
A review of experiments which demonstrate the release of ATP from skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and active brain tissue. Effects of exogenously applied ATP to brain tissue are discussed in relation to whole body exercise. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Biology, Human Body, Laboratory Experiments, Metabolism
Carnevale, Dan – Chronicle of Higher Education, 2003
Describes how a handful of institutions are experimenting with computer simulations to offer hard science labs through distance education. (EV)

Keogh, Daniel P.; Sparkes, Timothy C. – American Biology Teacher, 2003
Describes a science laboratory on reproductive behavior and studies the dynamics in Lirceus, an aquatic crustacean of which the females evaluate the males' quality through mating contests. Explains collecting isopods and developing colonies in the lab environment. Investigates food deprivation, locomotor activity, and behavioral trials to…

McComas, William F.; Moore, Lisa S. – American Biology Teacher, 2001
Discusses the effects of expectancy on learning in a life science instructional laboratory exercise. Contends that prior knowledge directs the act of observing. Investigates the role of prior conceptions on secondary school students' ability to observe scientific phenomena. (Contains 30 references.) (YDS)

Ambler, Julie; Pelovitz, Kelly; Ladd, Timothy; Steucek, Guy – American Biology Teacher, 2001
Describes an experiment in which the incubation time to observe denitrification and other processes of the nitrogen cycle is reduced from 7-14 days to 24-48 hours. Presents calculations of processes in the nitrogen cycle in the form of a dichotomous key. (SAH)
