Peer reviewedSmith, Richard M.; Kramer, Gene A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
The common item equating method (weighted and unweighted) and the one-step missing data calibration method used with Rasch measurement models were compared using data from six equivalent forms of a perceptual ability test administered as part of the Dental Admission Test. Results suggest little difference among the equating methods. (SLD)

Peer reviewedLongford, N. T.; Muthen, B. O. – Psychometrika, 1992
A two-level model for factor analysis is defined, and formulas for a scoring algorithm for this model are derived. A simple noniterative method based on decomposition of total sums of the squares and cross-products is discussed and illustrated with simulated data and data from the Second International Mathematics Study. (SLD)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Cluster Analysis, Computer Simulation, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedCliff, Norman; Charlin, Ventura – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
Variance formulas of H. E. Daniels and M. G. Kendall (1947) are generalized to allow for the presence of ties and variance of the sample tau correlation. Applications of these generalized formulas are discussed and illustrated using data from a 1965 study of contraceptive use in 15 developing countries. (SLD)
Descriptors: Analysis of Covariance, Analysis of Variance, Contraception, Developing Nations
Peer reviewedBrown, R. L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
A Monte Carlo study explores the robustness assumption in structural equation modeling of using a full information normal theory generalized least-squares estimation procedure on Type I censored data. The efficacy of the following proposed alternate estimation procedures is assessed: asymptotically distribution free estimator and a latent…

Peer reviewedBijleveld, Catrien C. J. H.; de Leeuw, Jan – Psychometrika, 1991
An alternating least squares method for iteratively fitting the longitudinal reduced-rank regression model is proposed. For social and behavioral science applications, the developed algorithm does not rely on the assumption of multinomial errors and allows for scaling of input and output variables. (SLD)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Behavioral Science Research, Cross Sectional Studies, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedTrochim, William M. K.; And Others – Evaluation Review, 1991
The regression-discontinuity design involving a treatment interaction effect (TIE), pretest-posttest functional form specification, and choice of point-of-estimation of the TIE are examined. Formulas for controlling the magnitude of TIE in simulations can be used for simulating the randomized experimental case where estimation is not at the…

Peer reviewedYee, Penny L.; And Others – Cognitive Psychology, 1991
Four experiments with 128 college undergraduates and 82 Air Force recruits examined the coordination of a verbal component task with a visual spatial and an auditory component task. Results show that ability to coordinate perceptual and visual information differs from ability to deal with either type of information alone. (SLD)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Context Effect, Coordination, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedKimmins, Dovie – Mathematics Teacher, 1991
Described is a solution to the problem and a discussion of a computer estimation of the probability. A computer program written in Turbo Pascal and two sample runs are provided. Computations for a more general problem of this nature and changes in the program necessary for use with Apple Pascal are appended. (CW)

Peer reviewedHarvill, Leo M. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1991
This paper discusses standard error of measurement (SEM), the amount of variation or spread in the measurement errors for a test, and gives information needed to interpret test scores using SEMs. SEMs at various score levels should be used in calculating score bands rather than a single SEM value. (SLD)
Descriptors: Definitions, Equations (Mathematics), Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedMoffitt, Robert – Evaluation Review, 1991
Statistical methods for program evaluation with nonexperimental data are reviewed with emphasis on circumstances in which nonexperimental data are valid. Three solutions are proposed for problems of selection bias, and implications for evaluation design and data collection and analysis are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Bias, Cohort Analysis, Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedPrichard, Mary Kim – Mathematics Teacher, 1993
Discusses the process of mathematical iteration, its benefits as a problem-solving technique, and how to teach it. Presents a selection of mathematical ideas and problems that can be solved and explored using iteration, along with related BASIC computer programs. (MDH)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Equations (Mathematics), Estimation (Mathematics), Learning Strategies
Peer reviewedWilliams, Bryan L.; And Others – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1993
A version of the randomized response survey unrelated question technique is presented in which the answer to the unrelated question is known to be yes. Raw data become a direct linear transformation of response to the sensitive question and can be used in analysis at the individual level. (SLD)
Descriptors: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Equations (Mathematics), Individual Differences, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedVeney, James E. – Evaluation Practice, 1993
The application of time series analysis is described, focusing on the use of regression analysis for analyzing time series in a way that may make it more readily available to an evaluation practice audience. Practical guidelines are suggested for decision makers in government, health, and social welfare agencies. (SLD)
Descriptors: Decision Making, Equations (Mathematics), Evaluation Methods, Government Role
Peer reviewedBerner, Leslie; McLaughlin, Patrick; Verzoni, Kathryn A. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1997
Discusses mathematical thinking and problems posed by seventh- grade students as part of a unit on the study of algebraic ideas. The unit involves showing how variables cause changes and also incorporates the solving of systems of equations by constructing line-graph drawings and combination charts. (AIM)
Descriptors: Algebra, Equations (Mathematics), Graphs, Junior High Schools
Herbal-Eisenmann, Beth A.; Breyfogle, M. Lynn – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2005
This article describes different ways that teachers and students interact in mathematics classrooms and the implications of those interactions for students' opportunities to share their thinking. (Contains 1 figure.)
Descriptors: Mathematics Instruction, Teaching Methods, Questioning Techniques, Middle School Students
