Barnard, A. J.; Ahlborn, B. – American Journal of Physics, 1975
In this simple experiment for an undergraduate laboratory a laser beam is passed through the mixing zone of two liquids with different refractive indices. The spatial variation of the refractive index, at different times during the mixing, can be determined from the observed deflection of the beam. (Author)

Kauffman, G. B. – Education in Chemistry, 1975
Describes four synthesis experiments, adapted for the general chemistry laboratory, in which compounds in unusual oxidation are prepared. The abnormal oxidation states involved in the synthesis products are: silver (II), chromium (II), lead (IV), and bromine (I). (MLH)

Friesen, R. J., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes two experiments, one involving the electrolysis of potassium iodide and the other involving a diffusion process in solid copper. (GS)

Sweigart, D. A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes an open-ended experiment involving a bioinorganic system that provides the student a direct link between thermodynamics and kinetics. It utilizes a rapid reaction technique and requires one to clearly understand the relationship of experimental observable (absorbance) to a mechanism. (GS)

Snadden, R. B.; Runquist, O. – Education in Chemistry, 1975
Presents an experiment in which a programmable calculator is employed as a data generating system for simulated laboratory experiments. The example used as an illustration is a simulated conductimetric titration of an aqueous solution of HC1 with an aqueous solution of NaOH. (Author/EB)

Oppegard, Milo – Physics Teacher, 1975
Describes the construction of a calorimeter to be used in an experiment which consists of measuring the rate at which ground level solar radiation raises the temperature of the metal in the calorimeter. (GS)

Beistel, D. W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Explains two approaches for stimulating the intellectual development of the student from the concrete to formal operations level. One method involves experimentation and critique during which the student deduces the principle. The second involves a lecture approach that utilizes the creation of the discrepant event. (GS)

Bowman, L. H.; Shull, C. M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes an experiment designed to augment textual materials conducive to the inquiry approach to learning. The experiment is the culminating experience in a series designed to illustrate the fundamental nature of the atom: its quantized energy nature, its electrical nature, and its combining ability. (Author/GS)

Stirn, Bradley A. – American Journal of Physics, 1975
Describes an experiment for recording holograms using a minimum of costly apparatus. Includes a description of apparatus and materials, the procedure for recording the hologram, the processing of the hologram, and the reconstruction of the image. (GS)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Laboratory Experiments, Lasers

Vermillion, Robert E. – American Journal of Physics, 1975
Describes an undergraduate experiment. Discusses a model for the behavior of bubbles under differing viscosities and pressure gradients and conditions for failure of the model. (GH)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Instructional Materials, Laboratory Experiments
