Peer reviewedBrownell, Kelly D.; Steen, Suzanne Nelson – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1987
The article discusses the physiological and psychological factors that influence the regulation of body weight and reviews several approaches to weight loss. A comprehensive, multidisciplinary program for weight control is proposed. (Author/MT)
Descriptors: Body Weight, Eating Habits, Exercise Physiology, Psychological Needs
Peer reviewedMcNaughton, Lars – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1987
Research was conducted to determine the effects of two doses of caffeine on the lactate threshold and also to examine the effects on substrate utilization during incremental cycle ergometry. Results found that caffeine increased heart rates and free fatty acid levels for all workloads and decreased blood lactate levels at some of the workloads.…
Descriptors: Blood Circulation, Drug Use, Exercise Physiology, Heart Rate
Peer reviewedGunnar, Megan R. – Child Development, 1987
This introduction to a special section on psychobiological studies of stress and coping discusses the problems of interpreting and integrating information on stress reactivity derived from a combination of behavioral and physiological measures. (PCB)
Descriptors: Children, Measurement Techniques, Physiology, Research Problems
Peer reviewedCarroll, Joan F. – Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, 1986
This article discusses shinsplints: how they occur, how to prevent them, and how to treat them. (MT)
Descriptors: Aerobics, Dance, Exercise Physiology, Injuries
Peer reviewedBeehler, Pamela J. Hoyes; Kamen, Gary – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1986
An investigation was conducted to equate auditory and electrocutaneous stimuli. These equated stimuli were used in a second investigation examining neuromotor responses to stimuli of varying intensity. Results are provided. (Author/MT)
Descriptors: Higher Education, Motor Reactions, Physiology, Reaction Time
Eastman, Joseph T.; DeVries, Arthur L. – Scientific American, 1986
Explains the adaptations to Antarctic waters that Notothenioidei, a group of advanced bony fishes, have exhibited. Discusses the fishes' mechanisms of production of antifreeze properties and their capacities for neutral buoyancy in water. (ML)
Descriptors: Biology, Ichthyology, Marine Biology, Physiology
Peer reviewedCohen, Jonathan C.; And Others – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1986
Serum lipoprotein profiles were measured in nine male and three female weightlifters who were taking anabolic steroids. The profiles suggest that steriod users may face an increased risk of coronary artery disease. (Author/MT)
Descriptors: Cardiovascular System, Drug Use, Physiology, Sex Differences
Peer reviewedMonahan, Terry – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1986
Research into aging confirms that increased activity is associated with increased life expectancy. The emphasis is changing from high intensity exercise to activity. (MT)
Descriptors: Aging (Individuals), Older Adults, Physical Activity Level, Physiology
Peer reviewedWing, Rena R.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1985
Investigated whether behavior modification would improve short- and long-term results of weight control programs for obese patients (N=53) with Type II diabetes. The behavior modification group lost more weight than the nutrition education or standard-care condition during the 16-week treatment, but at 16-month follow-up, weight loss differences…
Descriptors: Behavior Change, Behavior Modification, Diabetes, Obesity
Peer reviewedChausow, Sharon A.; And Others – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1984
Metabolic and cardiovascular responses during 45 minutes of continuous moderate intensity exercise were investigated in 11 children, 8-11 years of age. Results indicate that children exhibit metabolic and cardiovascular adjustments similar to those noted in adults during prolonged exercise. (Author/JMK)
Descriptors: Cardiovascular System, Children, Exercise, Exercise Physiology
Peer reviewedPruitt, Doyle L.; Erickson, Marilyn T. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Assigned 44 adult non-parents to a High or Low Abuse Potential Group based upon their Child Abuse Potential (CAP) Inventory scores. Monitored heart rates and skin conductances while subjects viewed videotapes of infants smiling, crying, or quiescent. Results supported the validity of the CAP inventory. (BH)
Descriptors: Adults, Arousal Patterns, Child Abuse, Physiology
Peer reviewedWhaley, Patricia; Hanson, LeeAnn – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1984
Nine listening tests were administered to 52 children in grades three and six with variations in presentation procedures (unmodified, filtered, and attentuated) and distance from the speaker. Results concluded that filtering and attenuating interfered with speech perception and that distance significantly affected perception. (CL)
Descriptors: Classroom Environment, Elementary Education, Hearing (Physiology), Listening Skills
Peer reviewedLewandowski, Lawrence J. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1985
Four physiological conditions associated with later learning disabilities are noted: Turner Syndrome (a chromosomal abnormality), preterm children with intracranial hemorrhage, children with incompletely developed connecting fibers between the cerebral hemispheres, and children with acquired brain injury. (CL)

This article discusses running as a universal means of physical training and of developing speed and especially endurance with sections on types of running, time and place for running, methods of exercise, and regulating size of stress load. (Author/JH)
Descriptors: Athletics, Exercise (Physiology), Physical Activities, Physical Education
