Rider, Elizabeth A.; Rieser, John J. – Child Development, 1988
Six experiments were conducted to investigate the sensitivity of one- to four-year-olds to changes in perspective that are occluded from view. Results indicated relatively early sensitivity to proprioceptive cues for changes in perspective and somewhat later sensitivity to appropriate visual-environmental cues. (PCB)

Dannemiller, James L.; Stephens, Benjamin R. – Child Development, 1988
Evaluates models of infant visual preferences with predictions based on the physical attributes of visual patterns using pairs of schematic faces and abstract patterns identical except for contrast reversals. Results suggest that a fundamental change in the determinants of visual preference occurs postnatally between 6 and 12 weeks. (Author/RWB)

Langdon, Danny G. – Performance and Instruction, 1986
Presents an overview and an example of use of the Information-Visualization System, an approach to visual selection enabling educators to match desired learning outcomes with the best visuals to carry the message. Decision tables and resource book containing visual options, information types, and suggested methods of enhancing visuals are…

Kail, Robert – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1986
Assesses performance of 9-, 13-, and 20-year-olds on 3,840 trials of a mental rotation task in which subjects judged if pairs of stimuli presented in different orientations were identical or mirror images. Results are discussed in terms of possible mechanisms underlying the impact of practice. (Author/NH)

Bornstein, Marc H.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1986
Two variants of the habituation paradigm were used to investigate fine orientation discrimination and shape constancy in 34 young infants. Results demonstrate that conditions determine whether young infants show sensitivity to relatively fine variations in pattern orientation or give evidence of shape constancy with the same patterns. (HOD)

Bush, Alan J.; Gresham, Larry G. – Journal of Applied Communication Research, 1986
Synthesizes existing knowledge regarding the communication effects of animation and empirically assesses some of these effects. Results of this confirm that animation can be a viable method of advertising. (SRT)
Descriptors: Advertising, Animation, Commercial Art, Communication Research
Greaves, Tony – Use of English, 1984
Contrasts the dramatic potential of two media--the novel and the television production--and illustrates why great novels should not be made into television shows. (AEA)

Mendelson, Morton J. – Child Development, 1984
Students in grades two, four, six, and college sorted abstract visual patterns that varied both in amount of contour and in type of visual organization (unstructured, simple symmetries, multiple symmetries, and rotational). Results suggested that children attend to both amount of contour and visual organization, but that attention to visual…

Nurss, Joanne R.; Hough, Ruth A. – Journal of Educational Research, 1985
Five language-eliciting situations were presented to kindergarten and primary-grade children to identify developmental trends and task effects in the complexity of language structures, vocabulary, functions, and story conventions used. Limited developmental differences and significant task effects were found. Implications for classroom instruction…

Metzger, Richard L.; Pambianco, Linda – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1985
Average and above average (supra) readers (grades three and five) performed a partial report task with a variable interstimulus interval. Supra readers outperformed average readers when the interval was more than 200 milliseconds. Results support the concept of a continuous relationship between memory and reading level. (Author/BS)

Bornstein, Marc H.; Krinsky, Sharon J. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1985
Four experiments assessed converging aspects of four-month-old infants' perceptions of visual patterns. Results together corroborate and extend previous findings that vertical symmetry has a special status in early perceptual development and that infants can perceive pattern wholes. (Author/AS)

Slater, Alan; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1985
Three experiments are described which relate to models of infant visual preferences and to the ways in which preferences can be modified or created by habituation. Results suggest that the Banks and Salapatek's contrast sensitivity model can be a powerful predictor of preferential looking in newborns and that preferences based on experience can be…

Peterson, Polly; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1984
Investigates the effects of pronutrition television programing on kindergarteners' nutritional knowledge, food preferences, and eating habits. Children were exposed to ten 20-minute videotapes over a period of 10 class days. Results suggest that children learned the nutrition concepts presented but failed to change food preference or consumption.…

Rosch, Eleanor; And Others – Cognitive Psychology, 1976
Results show that basic objects are shown to be the most inclusive categories for which a concrete image of the category as a whole can be formed, to be the first categorizations made during perception of the environment and to be the categories most codable, most coded, and most necessary in language. (Author/DEP)
