Young, R. John; Ismail, A. H. – Research Quarterly, 1977
When forty-eight participants in the 1971 Purdue Adult Fitness Program were retested four years later, it was found that the regularly active group increased significantly in physical fitness over the four-year period and it was (at both test periods) significantly more confident that the nonactive group. (MJB)

Morgans, Leland F.; And Others – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1987
Monitoring of heart rates of 17 adult male tennis players during singles and doubles competition revealed that subjects playing singles games reached an average of 61 percent of their maximal heart rate, while, in doubles competition, they reached only 33 percent of maximal heart rate. (Author/CB)

Mero, Antti – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1988
Investigation of the force-time characteristics of eight male sprinters during the acceleration phase of the sprint start suggested that the braking and propulsion phases occur immediately after the block phase and that muscle strength strongly affects running velocity in the sprint start. (Author/CB)

Myburgh, Kathryn H.; And Others – Physician and Sportsmedicine, 1988
To identify factors which cause shin soreness in athletes, 25 injured exercisers and a control group of 25 uninjured exercisers were studied. Methodology and results are presented and analyzed. Differences in calcium intake between the two groups is cited as a key factor in causing shin soreness. (JL)

Shewan, Cynthia M. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1986
Performance on a dichotic word task was examined with 15 articulatory-impaired children and 15 non-articulatory-impaired children (all between 5 and 9 years old). Results of presenting words under three conditions (free recall, directed right, and directed left) found no significant differences between groups on ear preference. (Author/DB)

Hoshizaki, Thomas B.; Massey, B. H. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1986
The static contraction endurance characteristics of five muscle groups were investigated in 38 normal, health, college-aged men. Four parameters of continuous and intermittent contractions were examined. Results support the hypothesis that endurance is unique to each muscle group and specific to the task performed. (Author/MT)

Pate, Russell R.; And Others – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1985
Eight male and eight female runners were matched on the basis of performance in a 24.2 kilometer road race, and subjected to various performance and body measurements. The results indicated that the male and female runners were very similar in body composition and in metabolic and cardiorespiratory responses to exercise. (Author/MT)

Warren, Reed P.; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1986
A study of 31 autistic patients (3-28 years old) has revealed several immune-system abnormalities, including decreased numbers of T lymphocytes and an altered ratio of helper-to-suppressor T cells. Immune-system abnormalities may be directly related to underlying biologic processes of autism or an indirect reflection of the actual pathologic…
