Ladefoged, Peter – Language and Speech, 1980
Summarizes the 16 parameters hypothesized to be necessary and sufficient for linguistic phonetic specifications. Suggests seven parameters affecting tongue shapes, three determining the positions of the lips, one controlling the position of the velum, four varying laryngeal actions, and one controlling respiratory activity. (RL)

Vincent, William J.; Britten, Samuel D. – Journal of Physical Education and Recreation, 1980
An acceptable substitute for the straight and bent knee sit up exercise is described. (JD)
Descriptors: Calisthenics, Exercise Physiology, Muscular Strength, Physical Education
Umstattd, William D. – Man/Society/Technology, 1981
Sensitivity to the sounds and noises affecting the operation of industrial arts and vocational education programs is imperative for the professional educator. All teachers need to develop the capacity to "tune-in" on noises or sounds which signify prompt reaction to a hazardous condition or an unsafe act. (CT)
Descriptors: Ears, Hearing (Physiology), Laboratory Equipment, Laboratory Safety
Valtin, Heinz – Physiologist, 1980
Describes some of the elements that the author deliberately incorporated in his writing of textbooks. Two categories are discussed: some general guiding principles, and more minor technical features. (CS)
Descriptors: Physiology, Science Education, Technical Writing, Textbook Preparation
Giansante, Louis – Media and Methods, 1979
Discusses the World Soundscape Project founded by R. Murray Schafer. Explains how the Project explores the ways in which sounds influence humans and how these discoveries may be applied in every area of education. (FL)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Hearing (Physiology), Listening Skills, Music Education
Matthews, George R. – Journal of Physical Education and Recreation, 1979
Edmund Peyson Weston's long and remarkable career as the father of walking speaks for the benefits of regular exercise through pedestrian activities and a simple life-style based on a moderate approach to eating and personal habits. (LH)

Blattner, Stuart E.; Noble, Larry – Research Quarterly, 1979
Subjects improved significantly in vertical jump capacity under both training regimes; however, no significant difference was found between the two training methods. (MJB)
Descriptors: Exercise Physiology, Kinetics, Motion, Physical Education
Noble, Bruce J.; Maresh, Carl M. – Research Quarterly, 1979
In general, basketball players with moderately high aerobic power who reside at an altitude of 1,000 m do not display the hypoxic response to an altitude of 2,200 m expected of sea level residents and aerobically trained athletes. (JD)
Descriptors: Aerobics, Athletes, Basketball, Cardiovascular System
Donald, David E. – Physiologist, 1979
Presents data on release of renin during direct and indirect stimulation of renal nerves. Conclusions show that renin release is influenced by change in activity of carotid and cardiopulmonary baroreceptor systems, and excitation of discrete areas of brain and hypothalamus by changes in renal sympathetic nerve. (Author/SA)

Hartin, Phillip J.; Barry, Robert J. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1979
Significant differences were found between the autistic and normal children for distribution of dermal patterns and ridge line disruption, but no significant differences were found for the total mean ridge counts or mean ridge count rankings. (Author)

Mack, Arien; And Others – Science, 1979
It has recently been shown that perceived motion, in the absence of any appropriate retinal motion, is a sufficient stimulus to generate smooth pursuit eye motions. However, three experiments show that perceived motion is not necessary for pursuit, but that retinal motion always governs pursuit. (BB)

Conner, J. D.; MacLeod, Donald I. A. – Science, 1977
Rod-isolation techniques show that light-adapted human rods detect flicker frequencies as high as 28 hertz, and that the function relating rod critical flicker frequency to stimulus intensity contains two distinct branches. (MLH)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Eyes, Physiology, Scientific Research

Liemohn, Wendell; Pariser, Gina – Health & Fitness Journal, 2002
Presents information to promote understanding of the concept of core strength and stability, explain why this concept is important to spine health, and evaluate trunk training activities with respect to their contribution to core strength and stability, noting implications for physical fitness and low back pain. The paper reviews the anatomy and…
