The lasting effects of tutoring seem to be more value-related than behavioral, according to a follow-up study (conducted two years later) of 324 tutored children. Participants in an Israeli tutoring program for disadvantaged children were contrasted with a control group, showing lasting effects only in such areas as academic aspirations.…

Testing professionals need to work with teaching staff and parents to help students prepare for standardized testing. Year-long preparation involving teachers and parents is a better alternative than teaching test wiseness strategies at the last minute before a standardized test. (Author/PN)

Current practice of telephone instruction across Britain's Open University undergraduate program is reviewed, based on regional data collected. Factors affecting the development of telephone tutoring and issues in its appropriateness are reviewed. (MSE)

Compared a peer model and professional model for teaching study skills to college freshmen. Subjects in both models significantly improved study skills relative to attention and waiting-list control groups. The peer model was as effective as the professional model in study-skills change. Concludes that a systematically organized program of group counseling and tutoring did not produce significant changes in the attitudes, reading ability, and grade point averages of academically deficient students who had returned to college after military service. (FL)

A peer tutorial program in the basic sciences implemented at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is evaluated. The grades of students receiving peer tutorials were analyzed and questionnaires were mailed to each participant soliciting their evaluation of services received.
