Peer reviewedDeibert, Edward; Koretz, Daniel – Educational Assessment, 1996
The use of achievement levels and anchor points in press reports of the 1990 National Assessment of Educational Progress mathematics assessment was studied. In a review of 41 articles, widespread oversimplification and frequent misinterpretations were found, sometimes stemming from standards-based reporting. Implications for future standards-based…

Peer reviewedNiemi, David – Gifted Child Quarterly, 1996
Data were collected from 540 fifth-grade students on problem solving, justification, and explanation of fractions. Fewer than 10% performed adequately on the explanation task. Students who received a seven-day instructional program on fractions in measurement contexts performed better than students receiving traditional part-whole instruction.…

Jitendra, Asha K.; And Others – Diagnostique, 1997
A pilot test of 700 students in grades three, four, and five, investigated the reliability of curriculum-valid mathematics survey tests. The development of the test and the taxonomy of curriculum analysis that was beneficial in test construction is described. Results indicate the effectiveness of the test. (CR)

Peer reviewedHofstetter, Carolyn Huie – Applied Measurement in Education, 2003
Examined selected contextual variables, their impact on test performance, and how the variables interact with the type of test accommodation that a student received. Data from 849 eighth graders suggest that numerous student and classroom-level variables are associated with mathematics test performance, English reading proficiency in particular.…

Peer reviewedBooth, Lesley R. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1989
Discusses the importance of identifying and describing the pattern by students in algebra class. Provides some examples showing the usefulness of the method seeing the pattern from mathematical materials. (YP)

Peer reviewedKolen, Michael J.; Harris, Deborah J. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1990
Item-preequating and random groups designs were used to equate forms of the American College Testing Assessment Mathematics Test for over 36,000 students. Equipercentile and three-parameter logistic model item response theory (IRT) procedures were used for both designs. The pretest methods did not compare well with the random groups method. (SLD)

Peer reviewedTatsuoka, Kikumi K.; And Others – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1989
The consistency with which students apply procedural rules for solving signed-number operations across identical items presented in different orders was examined in a study involving 161 eighth graders. Inconsistent rule application was common among students who had not mastered signed-number arithmetic operations. (TJH)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Grade 8, Hypothesis Testing, Junior High School Students
Peer reviewedGordon, Keith – Mathematics in School, 1988
Describes five problems for a mathematical contest for secondary school students: poster competition, team contest, speed contest, swiss contest, and relay contest. Provides the instructions, a typical problem, and scoring criteria for each. (YP)
