Hazelrig, Jane B. – Physiologist, 1983
Discusses steps to be executed when studying physiological systems with theoretical mathematical models. Steps considered include: (1) definition of goals; (2) model formulation; (3) mathematical description; (4) qualitative evaluation; (5) parameter estimation; (6) model fitting; (7) evaluation; and (8) design of new experiments based on the…

Boyle, Joseph – Physiologist, 1983
PuFT computer program (Microsoft Basic) is designed to help in understanding/interpreting pulmonary function tests (PFT). The program provides predicted values for common PFT after entry of patient data, calculates/plots graph simulating force vital capacity (FVC), and allows observations of effects on predicted PFT values and FVC curve when…

Peer reviewedClarkson, Priscilla M.; And Others – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1982
Knee extension isokinetic peak torque was assessed at four angular velocities, and isokinetic endurance was assessed in eight college age men. Muscle fiber type was determined and related to isokinetic strength and fatigability. Results indicate that factors other than fiber type and initial strength level must influence the rate of isokinetic…
Descriptors: College Students, Exercise Physiology, Fatigue (Biology), Males
Peer reviewedBerger, Bonnie G. – Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, 1982
Recent research suggests that exercise not only reduces undesirable mood states such as anxiety, depression, anger, confusion, and fatigue, but also enhances positive characteristics such as vigor and self esteem. Current research studies are discussed, and the need for additional research is noted. (CJ)
Descriptors: Anxiety, Attitude Change, Depression (Psychology), Exercise Physiology
Peer reviewedSilling, S. Marc – American Mental Health Counselors Association Journal, 1980
Surveyed the literature to delineate the etiology of LSD flashbacks. Concluded that adverse experiences while using LSD are predictive of flashbacks; physiological effects of LSD use may linger after the drug has been metabolized; and individuals who have flashbacks are highly suggestive and play a flashback "role."
Descriptors: Counseling Techniques, Drug Abuse, Etiology, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide
Schwartz, James H. – Scientific American, 1980
Historically described are research studies which led to the current explanation of the two kinds of intracellular transport-axoplasmic flow and axoral transport. Models explaining their fundamental mechanism and the kinds of materials they convey are presented. (BT)
Descriptors: Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Cytology, Models
Peer reviewedBeyer, Robert – Physics Today, 1981
Surveys 50 years of acoustical studies by discussing selected topics including the ear, nonlinear representations, underwater sound, acoustical diagnostics, absorption, electrolytes, phonons, magnetic interaction, and superfluidity and the five sounds. (JN)
Descriptors: Acoustics, College Science, Ears, Hearing (Physiology)
Peer reviewedMyers, Alan L. – Chemical Engineering Education, 1982
Applications of the first and second laws of thermodynamics to a biological system (running) are presented. Seven homework problems and four detailed examples are included. (JN)
Descriptors: Biomechanics, College Science, Engineering Education, Higher Education
Peer reviewedPuhl, J. L.; And Others – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1981
Indices of red blood cell status were assessed in eight high school females cross country runners six times and compared to three assessments made of 11 high school females who were not runners. (CJ)
Descriptors: Aerobics, Athletes, Blood Circulation, Exercise Physiology
Mayhew, Jerry L. – Journal of Physical Education and Recreation, 1981
Body composition refers to the types and amounts of tissues which make up the body. The most acceptable method for assessing body composition is underwater weighing. A subcutaneous skinfold provides a quantitative measurement of fat below the skin. The skinfold technique permits a valid estimate of the body's total fat content. (JN)
Descriptors: Body Weight, Dietetics, Human Body, Measurement Techniques
Londeree, Ben R. – Journal of Physical Education and Recreation, 1981
Postural deviations resulting from strength and flexibility imbalances include swayback, scoliosis, and rounded shoulders. Screening tests are one method for identifying strength problems. Tests for the evaluation of postural problems are described, and exercises are presented for the strengthening of muscles. (JN)
Descriptors: Exercise Physiology, Human Body, Kinetics, Motor Reactions
