Detterman, Douglas K. – Intelligence, 1982
In an argument for orthogonal variables to explain intelligence, higher-order constructs, including "g" as a single thing in intelligence, are suggested to inevitably result from complex systems with interrelated parts. Biological reductionism and other arguments for the higher-order constructs as explanations of intellectual functioning…

Vegelius, Jan – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1977
A new type of scale, called the bipolar ordinate scale, is defined with assumptions slightly stronger than those of the normal ordinal scale. The scale would be used for affective type measurement. The logic behind the scale and examples are presented. (Author/JKS)

Salter, Daniel W. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2003
Log-linear analysis (LLA) techniques for categorical variables are demonstrated and evaluated using data from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Symmetrical LLA and asymmetrical LLA address questions of association and inference, respectively. Configural frequency analysis is examined as a strategy for whole types research. LLA approaches seem…

Feldt, Leonard S.; Charter, Richard A. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2003
Evaluating a test's reliability often requires dividing it into 3 or more unequal parts, which causes violation of the tau equivalence assumption of Cronbach's alpha. This article presents a criterion for abandoning alpha and an approach for computing a more appropriate estimate of reliability, the Gilmer-Feldt coefficient. (Author)

Worthington, Everett L., Jr.; Wade, Nathaniel G.; Hight, Terry L.; Ripley, Jennifer S.; McCullough, Michael E.; Berry, Jack W.; Schmitt, Michelle M.; Berry, James T.; Bursley, Kevin H.; O'Connor, Lynn – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 2003
The authors report the development of the Religious Commitment Inventory--10 (RCI-10), used in 6 studies. Scores on the RCI-10 had strong estimated internal consistency, 3-week and 5-month test-retest reliability, construct validity, and discriminant validity. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses identified 2 highly correlated factors,…

Godwin, Lisa J.; Moran, James D., III – Psychology in the Schools, 1990
Investigated construct validity of the final and short form of the Multidimensional Stimulus Fluency Measure based on the creativity/intelligence distinction, intertask correlations higher than correlations to measure intelligence quotient, the relationship of quantity of responses to their quality, and existence of a response hierarchy in…

Davison, Mark L.; Hearn, Marsha – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1989
Results of this simulated study indicate that, when unidimensional stimulus sets are scaled in two dimensions using a rational starting configuration, the nature of the two-dimensional configuration can indicate the general form of the function mapping psychological dissimilarity--represented as distance in the scaling model--onto the observed…

Fagot, Robert F.; Mazo, Robert M. – Psychometrika, 1989
F. E. Zegers' (1986) chance-corrected association coefficients are derived via alternative methods of deriving coefficients of identity and proportionality. Three assumptions for deriving metric coefficients are examined: variable reflection, zero covariance, and covariance reflection. (TJH)

Saigh, Philip A. – Journal of School Psychology, 1992
Reviews history of psychiatric nosology and the use of interview data as a vehicle for formulating clinical inferences. Focuses on qualities of structured interviews as well as procedures for constructing these indices and methods for establishing their psychometric properties. Reviews practical and theoretical limitations relating to formal…

Wright, Benjamin D. – Popular Measurement, 2000
This class handout lists the three "Cs" that must be measured: (1) construct; (2) conversation; and (3) comprehension. Some suggestions are given for measuring each of these aspects of a subject. (SLD)

Wright, Benjamin D. – Popular Measurement, 2000
Uses the analogy of squeezing two glasses of orange juice from 4 pounds of oranges, no matter how many oranges constitute 4 pounds, to illustrate the distinction between art and science, as between counting right answers and constructing measures. (SLD)

Gierl, Mark J.; Bisanz, Jeffrey – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2001
This introductory textbook is a comprehensive guide to the use of item response theory (IRT) methods for psychologists. It bridges the gap between conventional wisdom on IRT and important recent developments that now characterize the field. (SLD)

Petrill, Stephen A.; Luo, Dasen; Thompson, Lee Anne; Detterman, Douglas K. – Intelligence, 2001
Studied the extent to which inspection time (IT) relates to psychometric intelligence through general intelligence or through group factors and examined whether IT relates to psychometric intelligence independent from other elementary cognitive tasks. Results for 569 twins aged 6 to 13 years suggest that IT and other elementary tasks predict…
