Schandler, Steven L.; Dana, Edward R. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined changes in tension behaviors and reductions in physiological tension associated with cognitive imagery and electromyographic biofeedback relaxation procedures in 45 college students. Results showed: imagery significantly reduced state anxiety. Self-rest was less effective; biofeedback greatly reduced physiological tension, but not state…

McMurray, Robert G.; And Others – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1983
To evaluate the effects of drinking glucose and fructose before prolonged exercise, six female runners were given glucose, fructose, saccharin, or plain water to drink before running to exhaustion. Metabolic processes were monitored. The best performance came from those drinking water alone. Fructose seemed preferable to glucose, however.…

Powers, Scott K.; And Others – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1983
In an attempt to identify physiological factors that account for success in distance running, researchers evaluated relationships among ventilatory threshold, running economy, and distance running performance. Subjects were trained male runners with similar maximal aerobic power. (Authors/PP)

Sady, Stanley P.; And Others – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1983
Oxygen uptake and heart rate kinetics for submaximum exercise (bicycle riding) were compared in prepubescent boys and adult men. Resulting data suggest that children and adults do not differ significantly in cardiorespiratory adjustments during low-intensity exercise. (Authors/PP)

Breckler, Jennifer L. – Science Teacher, 1982
Some individuals have muscles that contract extremely rapidly, while others have ones that contract more slowly. Recent research in muscle physiology which explains this phenomenon is discussed. (Author/JN)

Chapple, Eliot D. – Teachers College Record, 1981
The language of the central nervous system (the brain) differs from logical structures of language. Sound and movement together make up the total response patterns of the individual. In order to investigate the properties of interaction rhythms, verbal and nonverbal, the expressive and performing arts must be understood. (JN)

Traystman, Richard J. – Physiologist, 1982
Discusses in general the importance of a research division, whether basic or clinical, in an academic setting and factors to consider in establishing one. Uses John Hopkins' newly created research division for Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine to specifically address funding and intra- and interdepartmental clinical research programs. (DC)

Filkins, James P. – Physiologist, 1982
Outlines criteria for selecting young faculty to serve as academic physiologists at small medical colleges. Addresses abilities in research, teaching, and service. (DC)
Descriptors: College Faculty, Criteria, Educational Administration, Higher Education
Physiologist, 1982
Reports results of a survey of departments of physiology in private and public medical and nonmedical schools (N=98). Includes information on faculty, positions, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, funding, and salaries. (DC)

Butts, Nancy Kay – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1982
Percentage of body fat, ratings of perceived exertion, and maximal oxygen consumption were obtained during a continuous running treadmill test on 127 high school female cross country runners. The relatively low relationships between the variables tested and running performance indicated that other factors may be more important determinants of…

Belliveau, James F.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1981
Describes an undergraduate laboratory experiment using viscosity to follow the progress of the contractile process in muscles. This simple, short experiment illustrates the action of ATP as the source of energy in the contractile process and the catalytic effect of calcium ions as a control in the energy producing process. (CS)

Schack, Fred K. – Physical Educator, 1981
Although exercise and physical fitness programs for youth are required curriculum in most schools, the sport coach may not be properly trained in the physiological development of children. Some general guidelines are suggested for planning strength and flexibility exercises for youth in sports. (JN)

Cizadlo, Gerald R.; Brown, Gregory W. – American Biology Teacher, 1980
Describes an inexpensive, easy-to-construct manometric device that is a substitute for an expensive commercial transducer that is sensitive to slight pressure fluctuations. An activity for demonstrating the importance of CO-2 as a humoral regulator of respiration is described. (Author/SA)

Pearson, Judith E.; Long, Thomas J. – Personnel and Guidance Journal, 1982
Discusses current nutritional trends and the ways our bodies convert foods into chemicals that may affect thought, mood, perception, and behavior. A review of current literature suggests that nutritional deficits and food allergies may adversely alter emotional adjustment. Examines implications for counseling and suggests training and program…
