Madden, Sean P.; Downing, James P.; Comstock, Jocelyne M. – Mathematics Teacher, 2006
This article describes a classroom activity in which a solar eclipse is simulated and a mathematical model is developed to explain the data. Students use manipulative devices and graphing calculators to carry out the experiment and then compare their results to those collected in Koolymilka, Australia, during the 2002 eclipse.
Descriptors: Geometry, Mathematical Models, Graphing Calculators, Simulation
Campbell, William E.; Kemp, Joyce C.; Zia, Joan H. – Mathematics Teacher, 2006
This article describes a problem-centered curriculum for grades 9-12, using problem sets developed by a mathematics department and designed to take the place of textbooks. The students discover mathematical concepts in the context of the problems and activities in the materials.
Descriptors: Textbooks, Problem Sets, Mathematical Concepts, Mathematics Instruction
Literacy Instruction in the Content Areas: Getting to the Core of Middle and High School Improvement
Heller, Rafael; Greenleaf, Cynthia L. – Alliance for Excellent Education, 2007
Across the country, numerous efforts are currently underway to provide struggling adolescent readers with the high-quality interventions, materials, and instruction they need to bring their literacy skills up to grade level expectations. Over the last several years, a strong coalition of educators, researchers, policymakers, professional…

Protheroe, Nancy – Educational Research Service, 2007
This report presents research-based information on highly effective mathematics programs, including skill- vs. inquiry-based instruction, how to support struggling mathematics students, the role of school and district leaders, and staff development for teachers and principals. (Contains 1 figure.)

Oldknow, Adrian – Journal of Science and Mathematics Education in Southeast Asia, 2007
Powerful geometric software has been available to education for around 20 years but has not had the impact on teaching and learning of mathematics, science and technology that might have been expected. This is in contrast to the widespread adoption of software tools in the world outside education which use geometric algorithms to produce visual…

Nyaumwe, Lovemore; Buzuzi, George – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2007
This study investigated teachers' attitudes towards proofs in the secondary school mathematics curriculum. The study was motivated by a desire to fill a gap existing in the literature in relation to teachers' attitudes towards proofs. Thirty-four secondary school mathematics teachers' responses to a Likert type questionnaire and interviews were…

Beck, Shari A.; Huse, Vanessa E.; Reed, Brenda R. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2007
This article describes an activity that incorporates 9 of the 10 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards. Students explore a stacking garden containing multiple layers. The garden allows students to focus on finding the amount of border material needed and the amount of space available for planting. The problem balances the…

Shinkfield, David – Mathematics Teaching Incorporating Micromath, 2007
In this article, the author describes how he tried to improve the mathematical learning behavior of his ninth grade pupils. He relates that in order to promote mathematical thinking and asserting behavior, it was necessary for him to instigate a change in milieu, with a corresponding change to the didactic contract that had previously been…

Connor, J.; Moss, L.; Grover, B. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2007
The research question addressed by this study is whether or not students made effective use of dynamic geometry software to explore the validity of a geometrical statement. Particular attention was paid to the use of definitions and the types of justifications students employed. Interviews conducted with six secondary mathematics preservice…

Wilson, T. M.; Macgillivray, H. L. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2007
This study reports on basic, mostly pre-senior mathematical skills, as measured by a multiple choice questionnaire, of 566 students enrolled in a first year introductory data analysis subject within a science or broadly scientific degree programme. Most students had previously undertaken a senior high-school algebra and calculus based mathematics…

Waiveris, Charles – Mathematics Teacher, 2007
The title may appear daunting, but the exercises, which can be presented to students from middle school to graduate school, are not. The exercises center on creating fractal images in the xy-plane with free. easy-to-use software and questions appropriate to the level of the student.

Kay, Robin H.; Knaack, Liesel – Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology, 2008
The current study offers a formative analysis of the impact of learning objects in middle school mathematics and science classrooms. Five reliable and valid measures of effectiveness were used to examine the impact of learning objects from the perspective of 262 students and 8 teachers (14 classrooms) in science or mathematics. The results…

Kordaki, M.; Miatidis, M.; Kapsampelis, G. – Computers & Education, 2008
This paper presents the design, features and pilot evaluation study of a web-based environment--the SORTING environment--for the learning of sorting algorithms by secondary level education students. The design of this environment is based on modeling methodology, taking into account modern constructivist and social theories of learning while at…
