Peer reviewedLunneborg, Clifford E. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1977
Three studies are described in which choice reaction time (RT) was related to such psychometric ability measures as verbal comprehension, numerical reasoning, hidden figures, and progressive matrices tests. Fairly consistent negative correlations were found between these tests and choice RT when high school samples were used. (Author/CTM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Processes, High Schools, Higher Education
Peer reviewedKuhn, Deanna – Developmental Psychology, 1976
Studied the relationship between mental age and progression toward Piaget's stages of concrete operations and formal operations in a sample of middle class children. Formal operations in preadolescence and adulthood are discussed in relation to IQ. (GO)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Measurement, Correlation
Peer reviewedSwerdlik, Mark E. – Psychology in the Schools, 1977
The paper reviews WISC/WISC-R comparison studies which have been conducted with a wide variety of samples. Caution is advised in the interpretation of a WISC/WISC-R difference, as a discrepancy of one SD may not be meaningful. (Author)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Intelligence Tests, Literature Reviews, Psychological Testing
Peer reviewedBracken, Bruce A. – Journal of School Psychology, 1988
Notes that significantly different results frequently exist between tests that purport to measure the same skill when the same child is tested on both instruments. Considers discrepancies related to examinee, examiner, examinee-examiner interactions, environment, and psychometric characteristics of the tests employed. Cites 10 major psychometric…
Descriptors: Educational Diagnosis, Individual Differences, Psychological Evaluation, Psychological Testing
Peer reviewedBaldwin, Joseph A. – Negro Educational Review, 1987
The following instruments for measuring Black personality use the world view and cultural orientations of Africa have been developed and are described: (1) the Black Personality Questionnaire; (2) the Black Preference Inventory; (3) the Black Opinion Scale; (4) the Themes of Black Awareness Test; (5) the Themes Concerning Blacks Test; and (6) the…
Descriptors: African Culture, Black Culture, Blacks, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedDelis, Dean C.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1988
Explored validity of new clinical test of verbal memory incorporating constructs from normal and pathological memory research, to quantify the ways examinees learn verbal material. Factor analyses of normal subjects and neurological patients indicated that verbal memory consisted of a number of component factors, reflecting learning strategy,…
Descriptors: Clinical Diagnosis, Cognitive Measurement, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Tests
Peer reviewedOlsho, Lynne Werner; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1987
Describes observer-based technique for assessing auditory capacities of infants from three to 12 months of age. This technique, referred to as the Observation-based Psychoacoustic Procedure (OPP), combines features of the Forced-choice Preferential Looking Technique and of the Visual Reinforcement Audiometry. Pure-tone detection and frequency…
Descriptors: Audiometric Tests, Auditory Evaluation, Auditory Perception, Auditory Stimuli
Peer reviewedHuynh, Huynh; Casteel, Jim – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1985
Two approaches, the minimax approach and the Rasch procedure, are described for the simultaneous determination of passing scores for subtests when the passing score for the total test is known. (Author/LMO)
Descriptors: Cutting Scores, Educational Assessment, Elementary Secondary Education, Latent Trait Theory
Peer reviewedMcDonald, Roderick P. – Psychometrika, 1986
There is a unity underlying the diversity of models for the analysis of multivariate data. Essentially, they constitute a family of models, most generally nonlinear, for structural/functional relations between variables drawn from a behavior domain. (Author)
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Generalizability Theory, Latent Trait Theory, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedZwick, Rebecca – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1986
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relative performance of the parametric, rank, and normal scores procedures when the classical assumptions were met and under violations of these assumptions. This investigation included the normal scores as well as the rank test. (LMO)
Descriptors: Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Models, Measurement Techniques, Monte Carlo Methods
Peer reviewedKaufman, Alan S.; Kamphaus, Randy W. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1984
The construct validity of the Sequential Processing, Simultaneous Processing and Achievement scales of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children was supported by factor-analytic investigations of a representative national stratified sample of 2,000 children. Correlations provided insight into the relationship of sequential/simultaneous…
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Cognitive Processes, Elementary Education, Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedJust, Marcel Adam; Carpenter, Patricia A. – Psychological Review, 1985
Strategic differences in spatial tasks are explained in terms of different cognitive coordinate systems that subjects adopt such as standard versus arbitrary, task-defined axes. A theoretical account of mental rotation of individuals of low and high spatial ability solving problems from psychometric tests is instantiated as computer simulation…
Descriptors: Ability Grouping, Cognitive Measurement, Cognitive Processes, Computer Simulation
Peer reviewedMeisels, Samuel J.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1984
Proposes criteria for defining and selecting preschool developmental screening instruments and describes the Early Screening Inventory (ESI), a developmental screening instrument designed to satisfy these criteria. Presents results of several studies demonstrating that the ESI predicts school performance with moderate to excellent accuracy through…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Disability Identification, Evaluation Criteria, Maturity Tests
Peer reviewedClark, Austen; Friedman, Matthew J. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Analyzed psychometrics of a package of standardized scales used to assess mental health treatment outcomes in a VA cost-effectiveness study (N=451). Derived the following scales: family involvement, involvement with friends, labor market participation, symptomatology, substance abuse, client satisfaction, and client goal attainment. (LLL)

Leclercq, Dieudonne – Evaluation in Education: An International Review Series, 1982
In a confidence weighting situation, the examinee is asked to indicate the correct answer, and how certain he or she is of the correctness of that answer. This paper reviews the bases for confidence marking, its validity and accuracy in evaluating students, and it's use in research. (BW)
