Peer reviewedEducational Leadership, 1983
Excerpts from a policy analysis of Florida's high school graduation requirements of three years of mathematics and science. The report forecasts the probable impact of the policy in the areas of students, curriculum, staff, resources, and control. Ways of monitoring the actual consequences of the policy are proposed. (MLF)

Ibe, Milagros D. – Journal of Science and Mathematics Education in Southeast Asia, 1983
This study investigated the effects of specific criteria for marking a test on its reliability and validity. Eight algebra word problems were administered to grade 10 students. The objectivity of scoring criteria improved the reliability of the test, but did not affect its validity. (MNS)
Descriptors: Algebra, Educational Research, Grade 10, Mathematics Instruction
Peer reviewedGreen, David – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
A three-year research project in England investigated the probability concepts of students aged 11-16. A 26-item test was administered to 2,930 students. The development and test results of one item are presented to illustrate the difficulty of item construction and interpretation. (MNS)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Elementary School Mathematics, Elementary Secondary Education, Mathematics Achievement
Peer reviewedMathematics in School, 1983
The need for mathematical background in biology and chemistry instruction is described, with specific mathematical topics noted. The extent to which they are covered in mathematics classes is discussed, as is the usefulness of science in mathematics instruction. (MNS)
Descriptors: Biology, Chemistry, Interdisciplinary Approach, Mathematical Applications
Peer reviewedCollis, Betty – Mathematics Teacher, 1983
A framework is presented for integrating use of a microcomputer into a statistics unit. Descriptions of some programs suitable for the Apple microcomputer and ideas for lessons are included. (MNS)
Descriptors: Computation, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Programs, Graphs
Olds, Henry F. Jr – Classroom Computer News, 1982
Reviews "Dueling Digits," an arcade-style computer game, in which the player creates mathematical equations. Discusses features of the program, educational value, design quality, documentation, and ease of use. Tested on Apple II/Apple II-Plus, the program (requiring 48K, disk drive and game paddles/joystick) is rated as an excellent…

Peer reviewedSilvia, Evelyn M. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1983
How graph paper has been used to illustrate the algorithm for division of fractions is presented. The combined use of graph paper and an overhead projector can make the presentation even more convincing. A review of whole number division is recommended prior to the lesson. (MP)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Division, Elementary School Mathematics, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedUsiskin, Zalman – Mathematics Teacher, 1983
Enrichment activities that teach about geometry as they instruct in geometry are given for some significant topics. The facets of geometry included are tessellations, round robin tournaments, geometric theorems on triangles, and connections between geometry and complex numbers. (MNS)
Descriptors: Academically Gifted, Geometric Concepts, Geometry, Gifted
Peer reviewedSiegel, Steven L. – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
A problem involving the search for an equivalence class of triangles is viewed to provide several exciting and satisfying moments of insight. After solving the original problem, there is a brief discussion of a slight variation and several notes regarding related theorems and ideas. References for additional exploration are provided. (MP)

Peer reviewedNeff, John D. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1982
Pascal's Triangle is examined within the context of providing a partial model for the outcomes of dice throws. Several issues are addressed regarding the nature of the pattern. Discussion leads to the development of a general formula for six-sided dice. Modifications for other than six sides are noted. (MP)

Peer reviewedRyden, Robert – Mathematics Teacher, 1983
The nature of an investigation into numbers termed Nearly Isosceles Pythagorean Triples (NIPTs) is detailed. The exploration, even though it is stated to have no practical value, is defended as helping pupils see the beauty of patterns in mathematics. Two questions regarding the pattern of generating NIPTs are noted. (MP)

Peer reviewedHatcher, William S. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1982
The view promoted is calculus can be reduced to totally algebraic manipulation through use of elementary notions and facts of ring theory, which enable one to do calculus in the hyperreal number system. This approach holds promise of producing increased student conceptual sophistication and manipulative ability. (MP)
Descriptors: Calculus, College Mathematics, Higher Education, Instructional Materials
Piele, Donald T. – Creative Computing, 1982
The design of a computer program to efficiently generate prime numbers is discussed. Programs for many different brands of home computers are listed, with suggestions of ways the programs can be speeded up. It is noted everyone seems to have a favorite program, but that every program can be improved. (MP)

The theoretical structure of the scales of the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitudes Scales was supported by a factor analysis of the total set of 108 items. (GK)
Descriptors: Attitude Measures, Factor Analysis, Grade 7, Grade 8
Peer reviewedWells, J. Norman – American Mathematical Monthly, 1982
Details of a program instituted by the mathematics department at Georgia Southern College designed to encourage high school students to continue mathematics through their senior year are provided. The program involved one associate professor visiting several high schools near the college to talk to small student groups. (MP)
