Ginsberg, Rose – 1971
A series of experiments, all concerned with the topic of mathematical concept learning by the young child, were conducted. The concept mainly focused upon was that of inequalities. Five experiments were run. These are: (1) acquisition of mathematical concepts under experimental situation and in traditional pedagogical situation, (2) cued vs.…

Randhawa, Bikkar S. – 1977
Rich visual stimuli provided by the television medium may affect youngsters' cognitive processes and strategies in academic performance. Previous studies have revealed that television viewing enhances their achievement test scores through grade four, but scores decline after grade four. This paper suggests that visuals used in instructional…

Peer reviewedKee, Daniel W.; Beuhring, Trisha – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1978
Effects of verbal and pictorial elaboration on long-term memory were assessed. Second-graders learned a list of nouns by the paired-associate method, and long-term retention was assessed after seven days. Results indicated that although elaboration facilitates initial acquisition, it neither helps nor hinders long-term retention. (Author/RD)

Peer reviewedAckerman, Brian P. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1985
Second-graders, fifth-graders, and adults participated in an experiment of cued recall for cue-target picture and word pairs. Results suggested that differences in the encoding of both specific and categorical attribute information contribute to developmental recall differences independently of encoding intent and stimulus modality. (Author/CB)

Peer reviewedGibbons, Jane; And Others – Child Development, 1986
Compares the effects of audio and audiovisual presentation on young children's cognitive processing while explicitly controlling the amount and complexity of information. (HOD)

Peer reviewedHall, Donald M., Hughes, Jan N. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1984
A paired-associate memory task with pictures and words as items was used to categorize fourth graders into four learner types (high/low picture x high/low word performance). Poor paired-associate learners profited more than did good paired-associate learners from picture aids on the prose task. (Author/BW)

Peer reviewedVandenberg, Brian – Developmental Psychology, 1984
Analyzes the exploratory patterns of 112 children ages 4 to 12, using visual and auditory stimuli and toy preference and toy exploration tasks. Finds that a preference for complexity and for unknown toys increases with age and notes age differences in exploratory patterns and question-asking behavior. (Author/CB)

Peer reviewedTurnure, James E.; Thurlow, Martha L. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1973
The relevance of these findings to previous failures to find transfer and their implications for educational practice are discussed. (Authors)

Peer reviewedHolyoak, Keith; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1972
Study demonstrates the powerful facilitative effects of both sentences and interactive pictures in PA tasks, replicating previous findings. (Authors/MB)

Wicker, Frank W.; Evertson, Carolyn M. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1972
In three studies, pictures and words were compared on measures of imagery mediation, recall, and recognition in paired-associate learning. (Author)

Short Term Memory While Shadowing: Multiple-Item Recall of Visually and of Aurally Presented Letters
Parkinson, Stanley R. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1972
The results of the experiments reported here are in support of the hypothesis that visual and aural presentation lead to different forms of storage and/or retrieval. They are not consistent with models of human memory in which short-term storage is restricted exclusively to an auditory-verbal-linguistic process. (Author)
