Peer reviewedLaufer, Batia – System, 1976
An approach to teaching grammar to university students in a reading comprehension course in English as a foreign language is presented. It is argued that the material and the method of teaching should be determined by the special aim of the course. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: English (Second Language), Grammar, Higher Education, Language Instruction
Peer reviewedLi, Y. C. – Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, 1976
This article discusses the ordering of semantic units such as nouns and verbs in Chinese sentences, with references to problems encountered by students of Chinese. (CLK)
Descriptors: Chinese, Language Instruction, Language Patterns, Language Research
Pruneda, Armandino G. – Yelmo, 1975
Discusses the many uses of the honorific title of "Don" in Spanish literature and Spanish colloquial speech. It may be used to joke and express irony, as in the expression "don ladron" (sir thief), and forms part of many idiomatic expressions. (Text is in Spanish.) (TL)
Descriptors: Expressive Language, Idioms, Language Role, Language Styles
Sherman, Mark A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Two experiments examined the comprehension of singly and multiply negated sentences. Difficulty of comprehension was measured by the speed and accuracy with which subjects judged the semantic reasonableness of sentences. Marked and negatively prefixed adjectives were a particular focus of the study. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Adjectives, Cognitive Processes, Comprehension, Language Processing
Peer reviewedDenhiere, Guy – Languages, 1975
The principal recent models of semantics, conceptual, and lexical memory are explicated and criticized. A description of long-term is developed in terms of these models. (Text is in French.) (DB)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation, Information Theory
Peer reviewedKintsch, Walter; Van Dijk, Teun A. – Languages, 1975
Working from theories of text grammar and logic, the authors suggest and tentatively confirm several hypotheses concerning the role of micro- and macro-structures in comprehension and recall of texts. (Text is in French.) (DB)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Decoding (Reading), Discourse Analysis, Information Theory
Lauer, Patricia A.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1976
This experiment attempts to maximize orthographic while reducing semantic bases for processing by using lists of words from a single category (girl's first names), presenting the first letter as a cue for each word during both study and recall trials, and blocking together all words with the same first letter. (Author)
Descriptors: Cues, Experimental Psychology, Learning Processes, Letters (Alphabet)
Peer reviewedAaronson, Doris; Scarborough, Hollis Shapiro – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1976
Authors studied the human being as an active language processor in different task environments. They examined the empirical trends in two different performance situations where the subject processed and used linguistic information. Theories about subject's processing abilities in those situations were entertained. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Information Processing, Perception, Psychological Studies
Peer reviewedLin, Shuang-fu – Journal of Chinese Linguistics, 1975
Explores the semantic distinctions and tonal behaviors of four types of "lai" in Taiwanese. It is concluded that some types cannot be fully understood without reference to the underlying structure, the surface structure being often insufficient for determining the tonal shape of the syllable in utterance. (CLK)
Descriptors: Chinese, Deep Structure, Descriptive Linguistics, Language Patterns
Peer reviewedLight, Richard L.; And Others – Child Study Journal, 1978
This study examined the reactions of eight- and nine-year-old children to "standard" and "non-standard" Black American English and investigated the extent to which such children could verbally conceptualize their attitudes using a simplified version of the Osgood semantic differential scale. Results are discussed. (SE)
Descriptors: Black Dialects, Childhood Attitudes, Elementary School Students, Labeling (of Persons)
Peer reviewedMcNutt, James C.; Leri, Susan M. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1979
The linguistic performances of 15 noninstitutionalized and 15 institutionalized retarded children (mean age 13 years) were compared on usage of grammatical categories and structure of spoken language using the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities. (Author/PHR)
Descriptors: Auditory Tests, Differences, Environmental Influences, Grammar

Stein, Barry S.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Reports on two experiments which question the assumption that semantic processing is superior to nonsemantic processing, and which demonstrate that effective semantic elaboration cannot be equated with the quantity of semantically congrous information. (Author/AM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research, Learning
Peer reviewedBlum, Shoshana; Levenston, E. A. – Language Learning, 1978
Demonstrates the operation of the universal principles of lexical simplification, through an examination of its use in translation; second language learning and teaching, and simplified reading texts. (Author/AM)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Language Research, Language Universals, Language Usage
Leonard, Rex L. – Journal of Aerospace Education, 1978
Declining enrollments in aerospace teacher workshops suggest the need for evaluation and cost effectiveness measurements. A major purpose of this article is to illustrate some typical evaluation methodologies, including the semantic differential. (MA)
