Peer reviewedMaple, Sue A.; Stage, Frances K. – American Educational Research Journal, 1991
A longitudinal model of mathematics/science major choice at college entrance for Black and White, male and female students was tested using a "High School and Beyond" sample. Significant predictors of choice included sophomore choice of major, mathematics attitudes, mathematics/sciences courses completed by senior year, and various…

Peer reviewedvan den Bergh, Huub – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
In this study, 590 third graders from 12 Dutch schools took 32 tests indicating 16 semantic Structure-of-Intellect (SI) abilities and 1 of 4 reading comprehension tests, involving either multiple-choice or open-ended items. Results indicate that item type for reading comprehension is congeneric with respect to SI abilities measured. (TJH)
Descriptors: Comparative Testing, Computer Assisted Testing, Construct Validity, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedHand, Michael L. – Evaluation Review, 1990
Use of the bootstrap resampling technique (BRT) is assessed in its application to resampling analysis associated with measurement of payment allocation errors by federally funded Family Assistance Programs. The BRT is applied to a food stamp quality control database in Oregon. This analysis highlights the outlier-sensitivity of the…

Peer reviewedvan Merrienboer, Jeroen J. G. – Journal of Research on Computing in Education, 1990
Describes two experiments, one with undergraduates and one with high school students, that tested instructional strategies for teaching computer programing. The cognitive styles of impulsivity and reflection are examined, completion strategy versus generation strategy is tested, and results support a preferential model rather than a compensatory…

Descriptors: Agency Cooperation, Cochlear Implants, Communication Aids (for Disabled), Consultants
Peer reviewedStevens, Jill – Mathematics Teacher, 1993
Presents activities in which students develop and analyze scatterplots on graphing calculators to model corn growth, decay, a box of maximum volume, and weather prediction. Provides reproducible worksheets. (MDH)
Descriptors: Cooperative Learning, Data Analysis, Data Interpretation, Functions (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedUpchurch, Dawn M.; And Others – American Sociological Review, 1993
Replies to "Adolescent Mothers Drop Out" (Douglas K. Anderson, 1993). It is indeed true that women who begin childbearing as adolescents achieve less schooling than do women who postpone or forego childbearing, but debate about why continues. It is argued that the apparent impact of early childbearing on education may result from a common set of…

Peer reviewedAdams, Gerald J.; Dial, Micah – Education and Urban Society, 1993
Reports on characteristics significantly related to teacher retention in a large urban school district using a Cox regression model to model teacher turnover for a sample of 2,327 white, black, and Hispanic-American first-year teachers. Sex, ethnicity, education, and certification route are significantly related to teacher retention. (SLD)

Clinical Issues in the Use of the "DSM-III-R" with African American Children: A Diagnostic Paradigm.
Peer reviewedJohnson, Ronn – Journal of Black Psychology, 1993
Reviews concerns related to diagnoses in delivery of mental health services, specifically, application of the principles of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-III-R) to African-American children. An alternative diagnostic model is proposed, and recommendations are made for enhancing the diagnostic process. (SLD)
Descriptors: Black Youth, Clinical Diagnosis, Diagnostic Tests, Disadvantaged Youth
Peer reviewedSilver, Edward A.; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1993
Middle school students' (n=200) solutions to division-with-remainder story problems and their attempts to make sense of their answers were analyzed for evidence that supported or refuted hypothesized semantic-processing models. The models helped explain students' failure to solve these problems in school settings. (Contains 17 references.)…
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Content Area Writing, Division, Heuristics
Peer reviewedFernanadez, Maria L.; And Others – Mathematics Teacher, 1994
Discusses research involving instruction to help students develop their mental managerial processes or metacognition, the role of a framework for problem-solving activities, the teacher as model or moderator, problem solving involving groups or pairs, and weaving writing into problem solving. (Contains 18 references.) (MKR)
