Morrison, Frederick J. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1982
To explore possible age differences, the first experiment assessed speed and maintenance of alertness in 5-year-olds, 8-year-olds, and adults. The second study tested the hypothesis that developmental variation in processing speed observed in some studies was attributable in part to age differences in alerting processes. (MP)

Ball, Karlene; Sekuler, Robert – Science, 1982
Training improves the ability of human observers to discriminate between two similar directions of motion. This gradual improvement is specific to the direction on which an observer is trained, enduring for several months. Improvement does not affect motion perception generally, nor does it depend on recognition of details of the movement. (Author)

Blackwell, Scott L.; And Others – Child Development, 1983
The apprehension spans of learning-disabled and normal boys were compared by means of a forced-choice letter-recognition task involving tachistoscopic exposures of letter displays. Results of three experiments indicated that the decreased spans of apprehension observed in the first experiment for learning-disabled boys resulted either from greater…

Aeschleman, S. R.; Higgins, Ann F. – Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 1982
Results of a study involving 24 developmentally delayed preschoolers revealed that training on two or fewer exemplars of a stimulus class was sufficient to produce concept acquisition regardless of the training program employed (stimulus fading, stimulus delay, or reinforcement only). (CL)

Tinsley, Virginia S.; Waters, Harriet Salatas – Child Development, 1982
Two experiments replicate and extend Luria's (1959, 1961) findings on the development of verbal self-regulation during early childhood. Results support Luria's hypothesis that overt verbalizations facilitate control of motor behavior in young children and that language can play an active and integrative role in the development of behavioral and…

Watson, E. Selman; Engle, Randall W. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1982
Two experiments investigated whether poor readers eventually establish a dichotic right ear advantage as predicted by a maturational lag theory. The first studied developmental differences in dichotic listening for normal and poor readers when the order of reporting simultaneously presented items was unconstrained; the second controlled for order…

Saltz, Eli; Dixon, David – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1982
Results of an initial experiment show that motoric imagery can produce relatively large increases in the ability of young children, as well as adults, to recall meaningful sentences. Results of a second experiment show that motoric imagery can, to some extent, facilitate free recall of word lists when visual imagery has no effect. (Author/RH)
