Dzhafarov, Ehtibar N. – Psychometrika, 1993
A systematic investigation of the Grice modeling scheme for response time (RT) clarifies fundamental notions about RT modeling. The analysis presented can be used to determine what in a certain RT model constitutes a set of empirically testable assumptions and what is merely an arbitrary choice of mathematical language. (SLD)

Weinberg, Sharon L. – Review of Educational Research, 1993
Because it is sensitive to variability and permits partitioning of a distribution into the tails and center, the Hedges and Friedman Index can be used to investigate gender differences in each partition. It should yield greater insight into the nature of between-gender differences, as its application to Feingold's 1992 data illustrates. (SLD)

Kumar, Suresh; Sharma, Praveen; Garg, K. C. – Information Processing & Management, 1998
Examines the applicability of Lotka's Law, negative binomial distribution, and lognormal distribution for institutional productivity in the same way as it is to authors and their productivity. Results indicate that none of the distributions are applicable for institutional productivity in engineering sciences. (Author/LRW)

Seol, Hyunsoo – Journal of Outcome Measurement, 1999
Examined five Rasch-model-based item-fit indices in terms of their distributional properties and the power of detecting item bias or differential item functioning. Results indicate that, although these five standardized item-fit indices did not depart significantly from a normal distribution, the Type I error rates were not reasonable. (Author/SLD)

Parkhurst, David F. – Environmental Science and Technology, 1998
Concentrations of chemical substances and microorganisms are often averaged using geometric means. Argues that the arithmetic mean is a better choice for summarizing data because arithmetic means are unbiased, easier to calculate and understand, scientifically more meaningful, and more protective of public health. Results of a simulation study…

Rudner, Lawrence M. – Practical Assessment, Research & Evaluation, 2001
Provides and illustrates a method to compute the expected number of misclassifications of examinees using three-parameter item response theory and two state classifications (mastery or nonmastery). The method uses the standard error and the expected examinee ability distribution. (SLD)

Mecklin, Christopher J.; Donnelly, Robert G. – Journal of Statistics Education, 2005
In this paper, we consider some combinatorial and statistical aspects of the popular "Powerball" lottery game. It is not difficult for students in an introductory statistics course to compute the probabilities of winning various prizes, including the "jackpot" in the Powerball game. Assuming a unique jackpot winner, it is not difficult to find the…

Tellinghuisen, Joel – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
Monte Carlo computational experiments reveal that the ability to discriminate between first- and second-order kinetics from least-squares analysis of time-dependent concentration data is better than implied in earlier discussions of the problem. The problem is rendered as simple as possible by assuming that the order must be either 1 or 2 and that…

Oshima, T. C.; Raju, Nambury S.; Nanda, Alice O. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2006
A new item parameter replication method is proposed for assessing the statistical significance of the noncompensatory differential item functioning (NCDIF) index associated with the differential functioning of items and tests framework. In this new method, a cutoff score for each item is determined by obtaining a (1-alpha ) percentile rank score…

Baker, Bruce D.; Orr, Margaret Terry; Young, Michelle D. – Educational Administration Quarterly, 2007
Purpose: This article sheds light on some basic questions about the distribution of educational leadership preparation degree programs among different types of institutions and the distribution of advanced degrees, by type, exploring change over time and the relationship to regional labor market estimates. Method: We used data from five major…

Lix, Lisa M.; Keselman, H. J. – 1995
Tests of mean equality proposed by Alexander and Govern (1994) and Tsakok (1978) were compared to the well-known procedures of Brown and Forsythe (1974), James (1951), and Welch (1951) for their ability to limit the number of Type I errors in one-way designs where the underlying distributions were nonnormal, variances were nonhomogeneous, and…

Muraki, Eiji – 1992
RESGEN is a computer program designed to generate simulated latent trait distributions and then dichotomous or polytomous item responses based on item response models. The latent trait distributions can be univariate or multivariate normal, log-normal, uniform, or gamma. The item response models utilized in this program may have characteristics…

Poremba, Kelli D.; Rowell, R. Kevin – 1997
Although an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) allows for the removal of an uncontrolled source of variation that is represented by the covariates, this "correction," which occurs with the dependent variable scores is unfortunately seen by some as a blanket adjustment device that can be used with an inadequate amount of consideration for…

Hecht, Jeffrey B. – 1992
Previous research has demonstrated particular inadequacies in conventional methods used to identify outlier cases in bivariate regression models. Only through a combination of methods can one detect all of the deviant points potentially overinfluencing a regression model's parameters. This paper investigates whether a range of data points might…

Portland Public Schools, OR. Evaluation Dept. – 1982
The reports that teachers receive from the Portland (Oregon) Public Schools Achievement Level Testing Program are planned to help them to see how each individual student is doing, which students need help, and how the class is performing as a whole. The information enables teachers to focus on special needs and problem areas, and also to see an…
