The evaluation process as it affects teacher improvement was examined at Carleton College. Assumptions were made regarding the nature and use of student evaluation of teaching and from them a series of procedures was created for securing student evaluations in written form. (LBH)

Recommendations are offered for correcting unnecessary conditions that lead to additional stress for doctoral students, such as: foreign language requirements; inadequate counseling services; unsystematized processes; unnecessary regulation; grading course work; and dissertation committee functioning. A study of the problems of reconciling nontraditional student needs, expectations, and attitudes with the traditional college environment and structure, conducted through interviews with 25 nontraditional undergraduate students in Britain, is reported. A survey of a state university's adult commuter students found them less likely to study on campus than at home, using the library infrequently, having little social life or time on campus, not extensively involved in on- or off-campus organizations or events, and generally not experiencing traditional campus involvement. Parent orientations, planned to better the parents' understanding of the freshman-year experience by providing a comprehensive view of campus life, are described. The orientations are aimed at assuring parents that their children have chosen their college wisely. (MLW)

The introductory course has a variety of objectives for both students and the college, including recruitment and screening of majors, provision of prerequisite knowledge, explorations of learning, developing commitment to college, and cognitive development. Fostering these goals depends on the students, faculty, and classroom climate. (MSE)

The authors maintain that student activities within the community college are needed and should be provided. They examine a rationale for such activities, look at some of the unique concerns associated with a commuting student body and offer some guidance for the development of activities for such students. The efforts of Floyd Junior College in Georgia to meet the specific needs of its students are reported. In Education 100, the students have a quarter of concentrated study on how to be successful in their academic work, including use of time, and reading and study skills.
