Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science, Instructional Materials
James, W. G. G. – Phys Educ, 1970
Discusses the historical development of both the wave and the corpuscular photon model of light. Suggests that students should be informed that the two models are complementary and that each model successfully describes a wide range of radiation phenomena. Cites 19 references which might be of interest to physics teachers and students. (LC)

Young, Andrew T. – Physics Today, 1982
The correct usage of such terminology as "Rayleigh scattering,""Rayleigh lines,""Raman lines," and "Tyndall scattering" is resolved during an historical excursion through the physics of light-scattering by gas molecules. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Light, Optics

Lawrence, John K. – Mercury, 1980
Describes the gravitational lens effect and the chance of observing it. The use of stars, galaxies, or quasars is recommended for alignment with an intervening lens mass. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Higher Education, Light, Radio

Chapman, Bryan R. – Physics Education, 1979
Presents selective and representative evidence relating to the genesis of the theory of special relativity. The evidence seems to defy most of the philosophic preconceptions which many physics teachers appear to have about the nature of physics. (GA)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Light, Mechanics (Physics)
Walker, Jearl – Scientific American, 1980
Presents the plans for constructing a spectrophotometer which can scan the spectrum in a thirtieth of a second. The instrument can be used to determine the absorption characteristics of a solution compared to a pure solvent. The instrument allows time to investigate phenomena that occur quickly. (Author/SA)

Jacobs, Stephen F. – American Journal of Physics, 1979
Presents two derivations of the fundamental laser linewidth that have been used successfully in introductory physics courses. The cause of the finite linewidth is identified with phase fluctuations in the electric field due to spontaneous emissions. A factor of 2 discrepancy between the energy and field analysis is explained. (Author/GA)
Descriptors: College Science, Electricity, Electronics, Energy

Armstrong, H. L. – Physics Teacher, 1979
Explains interference colors in thin films as being due to the removal, or considerable reduction, of a certain color by destructive inteference that results in the complementary color being seen. (GA)
Descriptors: College Science, Color, Higher Education, Instruction

Cordua, William S. – Science Activities, 1996
Presents experiments with polarized light for grades 8-12 which can produce colorful effects with a minimum of equipment and can illustrate many principles of physics, chemistry, and geology. (MKR)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Demonstrations (Science), Geology, Light
