Peer reviewedNoble, A. Candace; Mullen, Kenneth B. – Mathematics Teacher, 1992
Presented is a summary of the actions taken by American College Testing in response to calls for reform in standardized testing. The areas of reform discussed are test development, test content, skills levels, test criteria, and new testing initiatives, such as alternative-response-format questions and calculator use. (MDH)

Peer reviewedMarjoribanks, Kevin – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
Predictive validities of scales developed to measure children's affective and cognitive attitudes toward school were examined in relation to the academic achievement of 430 female and 450 male 11-year-old Australians. Results suggest that these scales may be useful short-form measures of children's attitudes toward school. (SLD)

Peer reviewedGrote, Gudela F.; James, Lawrence R. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
Validity evidence for a new instrument, the Situation-Response Measure of Achievement Motivation for analyzing cross-situational consistency of achievement-related behavior, is presented in a study of 246 college students. Exploratory factor analysis indicates the presence of two factors, striving and apprehensiveness. (SLD)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Achievement Need, Behavior Patterns, Coherence
Peer reviewedDunbar, Stephen B.; And Others – Applied Measurement in Education, 1991
Issues pertaining to the quality of performance assessments, including reliability and validity, are discussed. The relatively limited generalizability of performance across tasks is indicative of the care needed to evaluate performance assessments. Quality control is an empirical matter when measurement is intended to inform public policy. (SLD)
Descriptors: Educational Assessment, Generalization, Interrater Reliability, Measurement Techniques
Peer reviewedMillman, Jason – Applied Measurement in Education, 1991
Alternatives to multiple-choice tests for teacher licensing examinations are described, and their advantages are cited. Concerns are expressed in the areas of cost and practicality, reliability, corruptibility, and validity. A suggestion for reducing costs using multiple-choice responses calibrated to constructed-response tasks is proposed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Beginning Teachers, Constructed Response, Cost Effectiveness, Educational Assessment
Peer reviewedRomero, Jose Eulogio; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
Development of new measures of the two dimensions underlying experiential learning theory using content domain described by D. A. Kolb is reported. Responses from 509 and 153 undergraduates and factor analysis establish the instruments' reliability and 2-dimensional structure. Preliminary evidence of validity is also provided. (SLD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Factor Structure, Goodness of Fit, Higher Education
Peer reviewedFlewelling, Janet; And Others – Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, 1994
In response to concern about the French language proficiency of teachers of French as a first or second language in Canada, a test of communicative competence designed for teacher selection and evaluation was developed. Descriptors: Communicative Competence (Languages), French, Higher Education, Language Proficiency
Peer reviewedSireci, Stephen G.; And Others – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1991
Calculating the reliability of a testlet-based test is demonstrated using data from 1,812 males and 2,216 females taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test verbal section and 3,866 examinees taking another reading test. Traditional reliabilities calculated on reading comprehension tests constructed of four testlets provided substantial overestimates.…

Peer reviewedPearson, L. Carolyn; Hall, Bruce W. – Journal of Educational Research, 1993
Two studies developed and initially validated an instrument for measuring perceptions of teaching autonomy. Teachers at all grade levels were surveyed on teaching autonomy, then 20 refined items were administered to other teachers. Results yielded two factors that were internally consistent: general teaching autonomy and curricular autonomy. (SM)

Peer reviewedSudweeks, Richard R.; Tolman, Richard R. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1993
