Accreditor Policies on Credit for Prior Learning (CPL): Guidance on CPL Provided by the Formerly Regional Accreditors, Career-Based Accreditors, and Faith-Related Accreditors. A CAEL Research Brief

Council for Adult and Experiential Learning
Postsecondary institutions have a number of decisions to make in designing Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) offerings, including the specific assessment options they make available to students, how assessments of prior learning are administered, what to charge for CPL, how to maintain high academic standards, and so on. States, systems, and private entities offer important guidance on these matters, and both public and private institutions also turn to their accrediting organizations for CPL guidance. This report describes how accrediting bodies address CPL in their policy manuals or other materials, focusing primarily on the CPL policies of the accreditors once known as regional accreditors: (1) Higher Learning Commission (HLC); (2) Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE); (3) New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) (formerly NEASC); (4) Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU); (5) Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC); (6) WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC); and (7) Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). In addition, the report contains details about CPL policies of the faith-related, career-related, and other institutional accreditors.
