Journal of International Social Studies, v15 n2 p24-48 2025
This study aims to explore parents' views and concerns regarding the teaching of politics and the inclusion of politically controversial issues in schools. We employed an exploratory sequential design and a mixed-methods approach in this study. Initially, we conducted indepth interviews with 12 parents to explore their perspectives on teaching political topics in schools. The study included parents with at least one child in middle school. We applied qualitative data analysis to examine the interviews, and based on the findings, we developed and administered a survey to 326 parents. We analyzed the qualitative data using content analysis and applied descriptive and inferential techniques to the quantitative data. The study's results suggest that parents view education as a fundamental purpose of schools. Parents express concerns about the teaching of political topics, including worries about teachers imposing their own opinions on students and potential conflicts among students and between parents and teachers.
