Peer reviewedMcCormack, Alan J.; Bybee, Rodger W. – Science Education, 1971
Summarizes Piagetian developmental psychology, and describes a study in which trainee elementary school teachers administered Piagetian tasks to pupils. During this time the teachers were being instructed in the development of children's thought processes. Results support the continued use of the method. (AL)

Peer reviewedOwens, William; Limber, John – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1983
This study attempts to resolve the conflict within lateral eye movement research by investigating the validity of the measure across a variety of tests of cognitive ability and preference, utilizing several procedures for scoring and classifying subjects on the measure. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Cerebral Dominance, Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Style, Cognitive Tests
Peer reviewedEgan, Dennis E. – Intelligence, 1981
Subjects judged whether aerial views would be seen by an observer oriented in various ways. For practiced subjects, time to answer was an approximately linear function of number of abstract spatial dimensions on which aerial view and observer's orientation were consistent. Ability correlated with linearity of response-time. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: Adults, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Tests, Individual Differences
Jelden, D. L. – AEDS Monitor, 1982
Describes a procedure for using the computer to assist in evaluating the progress of students on pretests, unit tests, posttests or a combination of tests. The use of computers to evaluate cognitive objectives of a course is examined. Twenty-four references are listed. (MER)
Descriptors: Cognitive Tests, Computer Assisted Testing, Criterion Referenced Tests, Flow Charts
Peer reviewedDe Lisi, Richard; Smith, Jeffrey K. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1979
The reliability of Oltman's Portable Rod and Frame Test (PRFT) was assessed using 60 first-, third-, and fifth-grade children. Various reliability estimates ranged from .90 to .97. Age and sex differences were also examined. (Author/BH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Style, Cognitive Tests, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedMartin, John D.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
The Shipley-Institute of Living Scale (SILS) was used as a criterion to evaluate the Quick Word Test (QWT) and the Wide Range Vocabulary Test Form B (WRVT-B). Testing 50 college students, the correlations were .68 with QWT, .73 with WRVT-B, and .81 between those two tests. (CTM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Tests, Correlation, Higher Education, Screening Tests
Peer reviewedBeech, Martha C. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1981
Findings were interpreted to mean that the BTBC can be used as a general estimate of cognitive ability. Canonical analysis of all variables revealed the presence of one common factor, language comprehension (Author)
Descriptors: Cognitive Tests, Concept Formation, Exceptional Child Research, Kindergarten
Peer reviewedReynolds, Cecil R.; And Others – Gifted Child Quarterly, 1979
The development of a children's form of Your Style of Learning and Thinking (a self report inventory designed to estimate the relative psychological dependence of an individual on the right or left brain hemisphere) is briefly described. Equivalent forms, reliability coefficients from several samples generally are seen to prove satisfactory.…

Peer reviewedDolan, Conor V. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1997
P. Schonemann (1992) claimed that the positive correlation predicted by Spearman's hypothesis of the positive relationship between the standardized black-white differences in means on cognitive tests and loading of the tests on general cognitive ability was ascribable to a statistical artifact. This paper refutes that claim. (SLD)
Descriptors: Blacks, Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Tests, Correlation
Peer reviewedBabcock, Renee L.; Laguna, Kerrie – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1997
The Educational Testing Service Kit of Factor-Referenced Cognitive Tests contains 72 tests that are supposed to be markers of 23 latent cognitive constructs. Examination of the factor structure of four of these tests with 165 undergraduates suggests caution in using the measures as markers of distinct factors. (SLD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Tests, Factor Structure, Higher Education
Estimating Item and Ability Parameters in Homogeneous Tests with the Person Characteristic Function.
Peer reviewedCarroll, John B. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
Using Monte Carlo methods, with item response data generated for a variety of test characteristics, procedures are developed for estimating item and ability parameters in homogeneous, unidimensional tests with person characteristic functions for different levels of the total raw score distribution. (SLD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Tests, Estimation (Mathematics), Item Response Theory
Peer reviewedLeguire, L. E.; And Others – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1990
To assess changes in visual-motor function with age, 20 visually impaired infants and toddlers were followed, longitudinally, with the Bayley Mental Scale of Infant Development (BMSID). The BMSID was seen to be an appropriate tool for evaluating such children and especially effective as part of a longitudinal process. (Author/DB)
