Saljo, Roger; Wyndhamn, Jan – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1988
The contextual determination of cognitive activities was investigated in a primary school naturalistic experiment. Performance at a group level on an elementary arithmetic task is influenced by the immediate context. Use of analogies as heuristic aids and the functional meaning of the task as a pedagogical praxis are assessed. (TJH)

Cordoni, Barbara – Academic Therapy, 1987
Some of the problems of learning disabled students which make teaching arithmetic difficult include: symbol-object relationships, reversibility of functions, perceptual deficits, multiplication tables, division tasks, word problems, and place values. Among suggestions for teachers are presenting and setting up problems according to students'…

Lincoln, Lisa – Academic Therapy, 1987
The mathematics concept of fractions was taught to a group of learning disabled, dyslexic, and multiply handicapped students (15-20 years old) by preparing a fruit salad. Enthusiastic student participation and enhanced knowledge illustrated the effectiveness of employing several sensory modes in learning activities. (CB)

Enright, Brian – Childhood Education, 1985
Describes five learning activities for practice of number facts which will aid problems with computation in arithmetic instruction. Stresses importance of elementary students' ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, rather than rely on calculators and computers, for higher levels of math. (DST)

Hativa, Nira – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1986
A study used the naturalistic method of inquiry in order to investigate the CAI (Computer Assisted Instruction) contribution to students' performance in arithmetic and to identify possible problems. The study was aimed at understanding the holistic environment of students' individualized drill in arithmetic with the computer. (BS)

Michaelidou, Niki; Gagatsis, Athanasios; Pitta-Pantazi, Demetra – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
One of the aims of mathematics instruction is to achieve the understanding of mathematical concepts through the development of rich and well organized cognitive representations (Goldin, 1998; NCTM, 2000; DeWindt-King, & Goldin, 2003). In this study the term representation is interpreted as the tool used for representing mathematical ideas such…
