Use of adult undergraduate students' work experience in recruitment, admission, and curriculum design is examined, and it is suggested that institutions must shift the emphasis in admissions from the quantity of prior experience to the quality of learning resulting from it, and organize curricula around that learning. A survey of 13 school of nursing faculty members and service agency staff nurses revealed each group's perceptions of the costs and benefits of having student nurses gain work experience in service agencies through practicums. This paper estimates the extent to which workers with different personal characteristics are likely to be employed in the public versus the private sector. Results show that government employment is preferred by veterans, nonwhites, and women; and that highly educated and more experienced workers are more likely to choose the public sector. (CT)
