The current attempts of religious and political conservatives to influence public education is placed in a wider historical context. The impact of religious groups and their ideas on the evolution of the public schools in America is traced from colonial times to the present. (PP)

Most criticisms of American schools are too broad and are off-base. The first criterion in evaluating education should be its contribution to character formation. Students cannot cope with authority figures, rules, and routines; a school structure that teaches them to regulate themselves is needed. (PP)

A typical day's activities at an Israeli kibbutz high school are described: Students live on the school premises, and study, work, and engage in social and cultural activities there. The kibbutz educational system fosters the values of cooperation, equality, and mutual aid. (PP)

Two types of dehumanization are defined, and modern instances of dehumanization--failure to regard a person as if s/he were the human being that s/he is--are analyzed. Rousseau's theories, as expressed in "Emile," are placed in the context of some of that author's other works to show how his educational theories can seem practical in terms of his views on social and political inequality. Using 276 students from Boston University and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the relationships between types of students and their work values and motivational profiles were investigated by means of factor and discriminant analyses.
