Jick, Todd D. – Administrative Science Quarterly, 1979
Describes the use of triangulation in a study by the author, and argues that triangulation heightens qualitative methods to their deserved prominence while demonstrating that quantitative methods can and should be used in a complementary fashion. (Author/IRT)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Data Collection, Organizations (Groups), Research Design

Williams, John D.; Wali, Mohan K. – Multiple Linear Regression Viewpoints, 1979
An experimental sampling procedure for communities on which coal had been surface-mined yielded missing cells and caused the number of degrees of freedom to be N instead of the usual N minus one. The apparent discrepancy is explained, and a solution to the problem is presented. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Research Design, Research Problems, Sampling
Fors, Stuart W.; Devereaux, Mary Judson – Health Education (Washington D.C.), 1979
Methods for evaluating school health programs are outlined. (JD)
Descriptors: Evaluation Methods, Health Education, Needs Assessment, Program Evaluation

Studer, Kenneth E.; Chubin, Daryl E. – Policy Sciences, 1977
Argues that "successful" social science requires development of a social ethic or sense of research responsibility, and suggests that an individualistic orientation is ineffective in coping with the unintended consequences of social research. Available from: Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company, Box 211, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, single copies…

Hutchinson, Susan R.; Bandalos, Deborah L. – Journal of Vocational Education Research, 1997
Describes Monte Carlo simulation studies and their application in vocational education research. Explains study design and analysis as well as use and evaluation of results. (SK)

Hoepfl, Marie C. – Journal of Technology Education, 1997
Compares qualitative and quantitative research in terms of features, researcher role, design, data collection strategies, data analysis, and judgment. Offers advice about selecting a method. (SK)
Descriptors: Data Collection, Qualitative Research, Research Design, Research Methodology

Zimmerman, Donald W. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1997
Paired-samples experimental designs are appropriate and widely used when there is a natural correspondence or pairing of scores. However, researchers must not fail to consider the implications of undetected correlation between supposedly independent samples in the absence of explicit pairing. (SLD)

Marcoulides, George A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1997
Presents a procedure for determining the optimal number of conditions to use in multifaceted measurement designs when resource constraints are imposed. The procedure is illustrated for the case in which the costs per condition vary within the same facet. (Author)
Descriptors: Budgets, Costs, Measurement Techniques, Research Design

Newburger, Craig – Journal of the Association for Communication Administration (JACA), 1996
Uses a hypothetical example of an institutional review board's concerns about a speech communication faculty member's research project to illustrate current issues that speech communication administrators, departmental faculty, and graduate students need to consider as their human-subjects based research becomes increasingly overseen by external…

Shrader, Mark J.; And Others – Journal of Education for Business, 1997
Marketing research students (n=19) estimated small business sales revenue using the Buying Power Index. Compared to a control group of 26 finance students who received no instruction in estimation or research design, the marketing students made significantly better estimates. (SK)

Boik, Robert J. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1997
An analysis of repeated measures designs is proposed that uses an empirical Bayes estimator of the covariance matrix. The proposed analysis behaves like a univariate analysis when sample size is small or sphericity nearly satisfied, but behaves like multivariate analysis when sample size is large or sphericity is strongly violated. (SLD)

Keyes, Tim K.; Levy, Martin S. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1997
H. Levene (1960) proposed a heuristic test for heteroscedasticity in the case of a balanced two-way layout, based on analysis of variance of absolute residuals. Conditions under which design imbalance affects the test's characteristics are identified, and a simple correction involving leverage is proposed. (SLD)

Tingling, Peter; Parent, Michael; Wade, Michael – Internet Research, 2003
Summarizes the existing practices of Internet research and suggests extensions to them (e.g., consideration of new capabilities, such as adaptive questions and higher levels of flexibility and control) based on a large-scale, national Web survey. Lessons learned include the use of a modular design, management of Web traffic, and the higher level…

Bloom, Howard S. – Evaluation Review, 2002
Introduces an new approach for measuring the impact of whole school reforms. The approach, based on "short" interrupted time-series analysis, is explained, its statistical procedures are outlined, and how it was used in the evaluation of a major whole-school reform, Accelerated Schools is described (H. Bloom and others, 2001). (SLD)

Foster, Linda H.; Watson, T. Steuart; Meeks, Caroline; Young, J. Scott – Professional School Counseling, 2002
Presents an overview of the most common types of single-subject research designs that can be used by school counselors, with examples of the application of each design. Suggests that using single-subject research design methods such as these will enable school counselors to validate the role they play in the lives of students with sound empirical…
