Doerr, Helen M.; Meehan, Donna J.; O'Neil, AnnMarie H. – Mathematics Teacher, 2012
In this article, the authors introduce the value of "e" by building on students' prior knowledge of slope and using their abilities to analyze, approximate, and interpret rates of change using graphs, symbols, and numerical data. This approach allows students to construct and interpret the value of "e" while laying the conceptual foundation for…

Trenkler, Gotz; Schmidt, Karsten; Trenkler, Dietrich – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2012
In this article a new parameterization of magic squares of order three is presented. This parameterization permits an easy computation of their inverses, eigenvalues, eigenvectors and adjoints. Some attention is paid to the Luoshu, one of the oldest magic squares.

Osborne, Jason W. – Practical Assessment, Research & Evaluation, 2012
Logistic regression is slowly gaining acceptance in the social sciences, and fills an important niche in the researcher's toolkit: being able to predict important outcomes that are not continuous in nature. While OLS regression is a valuable tool, it cannot routinely be used to predict outcomes that are binary or categorical in nature. These…

Ciaurri, Oscar; Fernandez, Emilio; Larrea, Rodolfo; Roncal, Luz – College Mathematics Journal, 2012
This paper gives a very elementary, essentially visual proof of Viete's product. We employ only the Pythagorean theorem, similarity of triangles, and exhaustion.

Katsuura, Hidefumi – College Mathematics Journal, 2012
Alternating series have the simplest of sign patterns. What about series with more complicated patterns? By inspecting the alternating series test closely, we find a theorem that applies to more complicated sign patterns, and beyond.

Kantrowitz, Robert; Schramm, Michael – College Mathematics Journal, 2012
If a series of real numbers converges absolutely, then it converges. The usual proof requires completeness in the form of the Cauchy criterion. Failing completeness, the result is false. We provide examples of rational series that illustrate this point. The Cantor set appears in connection with one of the examples.

Griffin, Pete – Mathematics Teaching, 2012
The notion of "understanding", and its place in the learning process, is often placed in sharper focus when considered in the context of learning and teaching algebra. There are tensions between "doing" algebra, following algorithms, using "rules", or "tricks", and understanding "what you are doing". How does this impact the "way" that algebra is…

Denny, J. K. – College Mathematics Journal, 2012
Using continued fraction expansions, we can approximate constants, such as pi and e, using an appropriate integer n raised to the power x[superscript 1/x], x a suitable rational. We review continued fractions and give an algorithm for producing these approximations.

Yiu, Paul – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2012
For a given positive integer k [not equal] 4, let "P[subscript k,n]" denote the "n"-th "k"-gonal number. We study "k"-gonal triples ("a", "b", "c") satisfying P[subscript k,a] + P[subscript k,b] = P[subscript k,c]. A "k"-gonal triple corresponds to a rational point on the rectangular hyperboloid x[squared] + y[squared] = z[squared] + 1. The simple…

Parris, Richard – College Mathematics Journal, 2011
Given a segment that joins two lattice points in R[superscript 3], when is it possible to form a lattice cube that uses this segment as one of its twelve edges? A necessary and sufficient condition is that the length of the segment be an integer. This paper presents an algorithm for finding such a cube when the prime factors of the length are…

Schaen, Richard J.; Hayden, Garry; Zydney, Janet M. – Teaching Children Mathematics, 2016
The best Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) design challenges are student centered, with students themselves making the key decisions. But with young children who are still learning basic academic and social skills, implementing projects where they truly take the lead can be quite challenging. To give students at one…

Charalambous, Charalambos Y. – Journal of Teacher Education, 2016
Central in the frameworks proposed to capture the knowledge needed for teaching mathematics is the assumption that teachers need more than pure subject-matter knowledge. Validation studies exploring this assumption by recruiting contrasting populations are relatively scarce. Drawing on a sample of 644 Greek-Cypriots preservice and inservice…

Aktümen, Muharrem; Yildiz, Avni – Malaysian Online Journal of Educational Technology, 2016
One of the definitions of mathematics is that it is "a science of patterns and themes". Within the scope of this definition, the current software technology facilitates the creation of visuals and patterns. Thus, GeoGebra software was used. The study was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, the Dynamic Geometry Software and the…

Namkung, Jessica M.; Fuchs, Lynn S. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2016
The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive predictors of calculations and number line estimation with whole numbers and fractions. At-risk 4th-grade students (N = 139) were assessed on 6 domain-general abilities (i.e., working memory, processing speed, concept formation, language, attentive behavior, and nonverbal reasoning) and…

Doyle, Kathleen M.; Dias, Olen; Kennis, James R.; Czarnocha, Bronislaw; Baker, William – Adults Learning Mathematics, 2016
One of the many roles of two year community colleges in the United States is to bridge the gap between secondary school and college for students who graduate from high school with weak mathematics skills that prevent them from enrolling in college level mathematics courses. At community colleges remedial or developmental mathematics courses review…
