This article, based on the authors' work in South Yorkshire, examines some of the attitudes and dynamics within a mother's group and participants' reactions to group leaders who are child specialists. Two nursing students describe how responsibility for a senior citizens' health fair provided an excellent opportunity for them to build on their previous knowledge and skills. In a group of 20 severely to profoundly mentally retarded adults, an interactional dominance hierarchy was obtained by observing the frequency of patient contacts, the duration of contact, and the frequency of contact initiation. Incidents of pledges' injury or death as a result of fraternity hazing warrant formal investigation by individual institutions. Survey results and personal interviews at Mississippi State University suggest that hazing exists. Institutions should reevaluate their policies on hazing. (NRB)
