Love, Bettina L. – Urban Education, 2015
Hip-Hop-Based Education (HHBE) has resulted in many positive educational outcomes, ranging from teaching academic skills to teaching critical reflection at secondary levels. Given what HHBE initiatives have accomplished, it is troubling that there is an absence of attention to these methods in education programs for elementary and early childhood…

Kim, Jeongeun; Kim, Jiyun; Jaquette, Ozan; Bastedo, Michael N. – Journal of Higher Education, 2014
Employing NCES databases, we investigate how college selectivity influences job satisfaction and prestige from the 1970s to the 1990s and across different racial categories. We find that the effect of college selectivity has essentially disappeared over time and that minority students are particularly disadvantaged with respect to job satisfaction.

Mackinlay, Elizabeth; Barney, Katelyn – Journal of Transformative Education, 2014
For tertiary educators in Indigenous Australian Studies, decolonising discourse in education has held much promise to make space for the diversity of Indigenous Australian peoples to be included, accessed, understood, discussed, and engaged with in meaningful ways. However, Tuck and Yang provide us with the stark reminder that decolonisation…

Hodge, Samuel R. – Quest, 2014
In this paper, I engage in discourse centrally located in the ideology of race in the United States of America juxtaposed to social justice with promise for tomorrow in higher education and beyond. I assert that social justice in kinesiology requires that once hired, retaining, securing tenured status, and promoting faculty of color means having…

LeChasseur, Kimberly – Equity & Excellence in Education, 2014
This article uses a critical race theory lens to explore how members of one community-district partnership understand "community." Engaging the community through full service schools (Dryfoos & Maguire, 2002), parent engagement programs (Comer & Emmons, 2006), lab schools through universities (Goldring & Sims, 2005), and…

Brooks-Russell, Ashley; Farhat, Tilda; Haynie, Denise; Simons-Morton, Bruce – Journal of Early Adolescence, 2014
Of the handful of national studies tracking trends in adolescent substance use in the United States, only the Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) study collects data from 6th through 10th graders. The purpose of this study was to examine trends from 1998 to 2010 (four time points) in the prevalence of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use…

Scott-Clayton, Judith; Crosta, Peter M.; Belfield, Clive R. – Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, 2014
Remediation is one of the largest single interventions intended to improve outcomes for underprepared college students, yet little is known about the remedial screening process. Using administrative data and a rich predictive model, we find that severe mis-assignments are common using current test-score-cutoff-based policies, with…

Santamaría, Lorri J.; Jean-Marie, Gaëtane – Cambridge Journal of Education, 2014
This study, based on the qualitatively rendered experiences and perceptions of educational leaders from historically underserved backgrounds in the US, argues that identity impacts leadership practice. To make this point, researchers build upon an emergent theoretical framework for applied critical leadership from the theories and traditions of…

Leonardo, Zeus – Educational Philosophy and Theory, 2011
The Right has a long history of questioning the importance of race analysis. Recently, the conceptual and political status of race has come under increased scrutiny from the Left. Bracketing the language of "race" has meant that the discourse of skin groups remains at the level of abstraction and does not speak to real groups as such. As a…

Pirbhai-Illich, Fatima; Austin, Theresa; Paugh, Patricia; Farino, Yvonne – Journal of Urban Learning, Teaching, and Research, 2011
This article develops the construct of "innocent racism" and argues for keeping questions of race central in teacher education. The authors report three cases in which they, teacher educators working within a school/university alliance, identified and addressed racism in their courses. We situate our analyses within antiracist research informed by…

Poos, Bradley W. – American Educational History Journal, 2016
The year 1968 denotes a particularly salient moment in American history, not least because it marks the year in which the Civil Rights movement lost its charismatic leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. The assassination of King on April 4, 1968, resulted in widespread and spontaneous uprisings across the country, including one in Kansas City. Not…

Pollock, Mica; Bocala, Candice; Deckman, Sherry L.; Dickstein-Staub, Shari – Urban Education, 2016
Professional development (PD) "for diversity" aims to prepare teachers to support students from varying backgrounds to succeed, often in under-resourced contexts. Although many teachers invite such inquiry as part of learning to teach, others resist "diversity" inquiry as extra to teaching, saying they cannot "do it…

These young people find themselves residing at the center of…
