An Investigation into Pediatricians' Knowledge of Stuttering and the Factors That Influence Their Referral Practices
Brittany Falcon Rutland
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Louisiana at Lafayette
This dissertation focuses on pediatricians' knowledge and referral practices for speech and language disorders, specifically stuttering, the factors that contribute to pediatrician's referral practices, and pediatricians' preferences for acquiring future information about speech and language disorders, specifically stuttering. Data was collected from 129 pediatricians with an active board certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics using a survey research design. Results of the statistical analysis revealed that pediatricians' knowledge of stuttering had improved over the last twenty eight years; however, pediatricians continue to report a lack of knowledge and inadequate training in the area of stuttering. According to the results of the study, pediatricians reported that their future information preference for acquiring future knowledge of stuttering would be a website about stuttering that is frequently updated with information for physicians, grand rounds material, brochures to use for parent education, and an online CEU course. Pediatricians also reported needing additional patient educational resources, screening methods, useful contacts, protocols for follow-up screening, and information on genetics and stuttering. Findings from this investigation suggest that continued education and training are needed to support pediatricians in their pursuit of knowledge of speech and language disorders, specifically stuttering, and to provide them with educational resources based on their current preferences and needs.
