Prenatal Family Supports Medical Provider Perspectives
JaneDiane Smith; Bonnie Keilty; Melissa A. Jackson
Infants and Young Children, v38 n3 p192-206 2025
This study informs the potential for prenatal early intervention (EI) by understanding the medical community's perspective of researcher-developed family outcomes for prenatal EI relative to outcome importance, whether they are actively meeting those outcomes, and ways to collaborate with EI if provided prenatally. Forty-two medical providers, primarily genetic counselors, participated in a descriptive, quantitative study using survey methodology. Medical professionals perceived potential prenatal EI outcomes as important but did not meet all outcomes. Certain outcomes were reported to be more suitable for EI to take the lead suggesting initiating EI prenatally could be a resource to the medical community. This study adds medical professional's perspectives to the developing evidence base in that prenatal EI could serve as a bridge between diagnosis and postnatal EI that does not duplicate, replace, and/or contradict current prenatal supports.
