The Importance of the Workplace in Building Prison Teachers' Learning and Knowledge: A Study from Portugal
International Journal of Lifelong Education, v44 n4 p420-435 2025
Adult education takes place in various contexts. Prisons are one of them. This article reports on research carried out in a prison of Portugal, which sought to understand and answer the following question: given the lack of prior academic and, in many cases, professional training that prepares teachers to work in such an educational context, how do they learn, build and develop the knowledge that allows them to carry out their duties in a place with such particular characteristics? We clarify that this is part of a wider study carried out at national level, in which the main aim was to draw up a profile of the teachers who work in prisons. Twenty teachers were interviewed to carry out the second phase of the study, which is described here. The main results tell us that none of them have had any specific training to carry out their work, and that their work context is relevant to this process of learning and building knowledge. Despite this fact, we don't believe that this process is enough to make up for the lack of prior training, which should, in our view, accompany the insertion of these teachers in such work contexts.
