Rethinking Academic Program Review: A Data-Informed Approach
Marilee Bresciani Ludvik
Assessment Update, v37 n4 p1-2, 16 2025
Higher education leaders face growing pressure to demonstrate the return on investment (ROI) of not only their institution but also each academic program offering. With increasing accountability and limited time for meaningful reflection on student learning and development, now is the time to rethink how a quasi-annual academic program review (APR) could supplement the more thoughtful learning outcome assessment-informed periodic APR. Institutional leaders need quicker, actionable insights to assess program viability, reduce costs, and support student, faculty, and staff success. Developing dashboards and algorithms to track program health takes time, but the investment is necessary. If constructed thoughtfully, automated indicators, such as stoplight dashboards, can highlight programs needing immediate intervention. However, institutions must also distinguish and protect mission-critical programs from those evaluated primarily on financial sustainability. These discussions, grounded in institutional values, require careful consideration even when data can be provided much more quickly.
