A young man with a long history of social withdrawal and lack of initiative was treated on behavioristic principles after the therapist had established a highly sympathetic relationship. Graduated tasks were suggested and assertive behavior was modeled and gently instigated. Within 6 weeks increase in motivation and level of activity was achieved.…

Sequential treatment involving systematic desensitization and relaxation, symbolic (film), live, and participant modeling were employed in the successful alleviation of a severe snake phobia. Three learning disabled students acting as tutors for their peers were able to modify school-related problems (problems of capital letter recognition and the beginning and completion of assignments) of the tutorees using behavior modification techniques. (KW)

Desensitization or assertive training or both were applied to hospitalized schizophrenics who displayed phobias, lack of interpersonal assertiveness, or both. In none of the patients did desensitization produce any reduction of avoidance of the feared object. The assertive training produces minimal improvement in two patients. (Author)

In a case of claustrophobia and in another with fears of flying, Japanese defense activities of the Karate type proved to be effective counter conditioners of anxiety. They were used in the former case in vivo and in the later case both in imagination and in vivo. (Author)
