Information design is the theory and practice of presenting information through the pairing of graphic and verbal content. It is important in the sciences because of the centrality of data visualization in research and teaching. This paper seeks to build the case for the inclusion of information design within both the Geography and university- or college-level general education curriculum. The authors also highlight the application of course-based research experiences and community-engaged projects that have been implemented at a lower-division undergraduate level through information design. Through end-of-course formal student evaluations, student reflections, observations by the instructor, and in-person comments from students during the course, it was shown that introducing information design helped to connect students with pathways toward technical data analysis skills, supported students in developing a sense of connection to their place of learning and with peers, and expanded opportunities for discovering the discipline of geography as an early-stage undergraduate student.
