Collier, Douglas J.; Patrick, Cathleen – New Directions for Higher Education, 1979
Summary statistics from JMA and HEGIS are compared. The financial variables analyzed for this study were: net tuition and fees, revenue from gifts and grants, endowment revenue, other revenue, physical plant debt, plant assets, physical plant interest, and net increase or decrease in five fund accounts. (MLW)

Hurley, Douglas E.; Lipp, Mark E. – CAUSE/EFFECT, 1980
It is recognized that growing management information systems will require increased user involvement in acquiring, maintaining, and manipulating essential institutional data. A technique called Service/Requirements Analysis has been developed for incorporating user input into system design and development. (MSE)
Descriptors: College Administration, Computer Oriented Programs, Data Analysis, Data Collection
Brown, Mark G. – Training and Development Journal, 1980
Presents an evaluation design which, because of its simplicity and the ease with which the data collected may be analyzed, is ideal for use in the "real world" as a practical method for evaluating the impact of training on employee behavior. (CT)

Romney, David – Research in Higher Education, 1980
Gerald M. Gillmore's criticisms of a study on the relative magnitudes of the "course effect" and "teacher effect" on students' ratings of teacher competence are examined. It is suggested that Gillmore's criticisms should not be permitted to detract from the conclusion that there is a significant course effect. (Author/MLW)

Gillmore, Gerald M. – Research in Higher Education, 1980
The critical issues, in a dispute between Romney's interpretation of his results and Gillmore's interpretation, are described as whether the teacher factor should be treated as fixed or random in the analysis of variance model and what conclusions can be drawn from the results of the study. (Author/MLW)

Goldstein, Harvey – Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series A (General), 1979
The utility of several longitudinal data analysis models for use with educational attainment are discussed and illustrated on a large data set. Assumptions of the models, choice of scale units, and data transformations, as well as real-life implications are emphasized. (Author/JKS)

Gilmore, David C. – Teaching of Psychology, 1980
Discusses a study undertaken to determine variables influencing student ratings of college level courses in psychology. Findings indicated that student ratings reflect many variables other than teacher ability, including class size and student major. Suggests that the sole use of student ratings to evaluate teaching effectiveness is questionable,…

Plomp, Tjeerd; Van Der Meer, Adri – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1980
The explicit statement of course objectives and a retrospective analysis of student test results are used in the evaluation of a mathematics course for engineering students. (BW)

Christian, Barry T. – Psychology in the Schools, 1981
A ratio adjustment procedure for baseline records which compares the observed response frequency with a maximum possible frequency for each observation period is described. This ratio is transformed into a response percentage with a more general predictive value for the behavior modification practitioner. (Author/RC)

Carver, Ronald P. – Harvard Educational Review, 1978
Reviews case against using traditional statistical methods in educational research. Examines "fantasies" entertained by researchers about the meaning of statistical significance. Recommends abandoning statistical significance testing and suggests other ways of evaluating research results. Advocates a return to the scientific method of examining…

Shannon, A. G. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1979
The semantic differential--one approach to attitude measurement--basically records a combination of a person's associations with a particular concept with a scaling procedure. This paper considers the implications of such a device for teachers of mathematics. (Author/MK)

Snyder, David; Kick, Edward L. – American Journal of Sociology, 1979
Addresses world-system/dependency theories of differential economic growth among nations and identifies reservations concerning the current empirical status of these theories. Presents a model which relates the world system to blockmodel analysis by considering four types of international networks--trade flows, military interventions, diplomatic…

McDonald, Roderick P. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1979
Two major and two minor principles are shown to serve to generate a large number of multivariate models, including canonical analysis, factor analysis, and latent trait test theory. The statistical underpinnings of the theory are discussed. (Author/JKS)

MacDonald, K. I. – Sociological Methods and Research, 1979
The use of a path analysis model to obtain unique, substantively meaningful decomposition of variance among endogenous (independent) variables in the model is argued. This reasoning runs counter to more traditional path analytic work. An example is provided. (Author/JKS)

Abt, Clark C. – Daedalus, 1979
Discusses how modern governments support and use social science research data to keep informed about social needs and the functions of various government programs. Questions what happens to the data and how government policy research influences policy formation. (Author/DB)
