Gilbert, Steven J.; Stephan, Lin – Social Behavior and Personality, 1984
Conducted two studies in which subjects (N=345) read descriptions of stereotypic behavior displayed by a seven-year-old boy or girl and predicted adult personality attributes. Results showed that irrespective of sex, the feminine child was predicted to be happier, more mature, less self-centered, and more expressive. (LLL)

Explored the relationships among Type A personality, perception of job characteristics, and job tension in 161 midlife working women who completed the Women's Work Questionnaire. A significant relationship was found, supporting a person-environment fit approach to the study, perception, and remediation of job stress. (JAC)

Examined the effects of sex and Machiavellianism on self-disclosure patterns in 166 students who completed a questionnaire assessing several dimensions of friendship relations. As hypothesized, a significant sex-Machiavellian interaction was observed, suggesting that self-disclosure may be a manipulation strategy for females. (JAC)

Examined the relationship between father acceptance, father control, and personality adjustment of 72 college women. As expected, both paternal behavior dimensions were positively related to the daughters' level of personality adjustment, suggesting authoritarian fathers have daughters who rate themselves as better adjusted. Assesses personality and family-interaction characteristics of 49 parents of autistic children and investigates the level of parental stress. Results suggested that the cause of the chldren's disorder is unrelated to characteristics of their parents and that an overall stress reaction may not exist. (LLL)

The relation between three cognitive ability factors and three personality dimensions were examined in three age groups. Subjects were 969 male volunteers ranging in age from 25 to 82. While personality has some influence on cognitive performance, declines with age in performance on some cognitive tasks are not mediated by personality. (Author)

The effects of guilt and approachability of a female examiner upon the associative sexual responses of 48 men and 48 women were examined. It was found that low-guilt males made more sexual responses when tested by an approachable examiner than unapproachable examiner. Subjects' perceptions of the experimenters were also examined.
