Several studies which compared the performance of professionally trained teachers with that of nontrained teachers reaffirm the positive results of teacher education. A case is made for longer and more in-depth preservice teacher training and more continuing education for inservice teachers. (PP)

Teacher educators need a philosophy consistent with an affirmation of multicultural education. Multicultural experiences must be integrated throughout the total teacher education program, involve both cognitive and affective learning, and have the acceptance and commitment of the entire teacher education faculty. A graduate studies program conducted by the Center for Teaching International Relations at the University of Denver (Colorado) is described. The Handicapped Experience Project trains preservice secondary classroom teachers to appreciate differences in students' abilities and adjust teaching to individual needs.
