A longitudinal study of the ego and cognitive development of boys and girls revealed that sex-different socialization practices cause the two sexes to create different premises about the world, develop different competencies, and use different cognitive structures to deal with new experience. In a family with a physically absent father, a high degree of psychological father presence relates to wife dysfunction and family dysfunction. The wife's instrumental personal qualities may be even more important in closing-out the father role and reorganizing her family. (Author)

Self-report measures are positively related to the masculine Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) and are similar for males and females. The BSRI scores are positively related to other group members' evaluations of female leadership performance, but not males. Findings point to the complexities associated with sex-role research. A model of vocational decision status was developed, and an instrument was constructed and used to assess its three dimensions. Results demonstrated the utility of the model, supported the reliability and validity of the instrument, and illustrated the value of viewing vocationally undecided students as multiple subtypes. The only effective treatment is early prevention, culturally, socially, and behaviorally. Children must understand that all excesses are bad. Being bad is sometimes good. Subjects were presented with tasks varying in the extent to which success was diagnostic of high ability and failure was diagnostic of low ability. Client photographs can be helpful to counselors trying to understand their clients' worlds, and also to the client's self-concept. It is an enjoyable, yet challenging activity and can be a valuable tool. Additional research is needed comparing photographs with traditional personality measures. (JAC)
