Peer reviewedSalt, Bernard – Journal of Biological Education, 1990
Background information on the methods and varieties used to demonstrate the cultivation of plants without the use of chemical pesticides is provided. Discussed are species and variety selection, growing plants from seed and from seedlings, soil preparation, using cuttings, useful crops, and pest control. (CW)
Descriptors: Agronomy, Botany, College Science, Culturing Techniques
Peer reviewedRobert, Francoise M. – American Biology Teacher, 1990
Described are simple experiments designed to demonstrate the effect of some factors of the environment (dryness, temperature, and fungicide application) on the size of some populations of soil microorganisms. Materials, media, techniques, procedures, and results are discussed. (CW)
Descriptors: Bacteria, Biology, College Science, Culturing Techniques
Peer reviewedDeavor, James P. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1990
Described is the five-week Governor's School course emphasizing chemical reactions for high school seniors. Students took two courses: a subject concentration in humanities or science and a global issues course. The course format included both lecture and laboratory activities. (KR)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Global Approach, Higher Education
Peer reviewedTabbutt, Frederick D.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
This paper reports on the success of a laboratory teaching technique for teaching undergraduate chemistry. Discussed are the premises of the approach, and the use of the computer, the explorations, and the seminar which are included in the course. (CW)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Computer Uses in Education, Course Descriptions
Ralph, Charles L. – Collegiate Microcomputer, 1989
Describes a computer applications course developed for undergraduate biology students (primarily sophomores) to teach word processing, database and spreadsheet programs, graphing programs, telecommunications, and file transfer procedures. AppleWorks software is discussed, course content is explained, and the microcomputer laboratory is described.…

Peer reviewedFaia, Jean E. – Science Scope, 1988
Describes a three-day classroom activity combining criminal investigations and scientific skills, especially observation skills. Provides detailed classroom procedures with an illustration of eight basic fingerprint patterns and a classification chart. (YP)
Descriptors: Classification, Junior High Schools, Laboratory Procedures, Middle Schools
Peer reviewedBuck, Michael – Journal of Biological Education, 1988
Describes the monitoring of the redistribution of blood by using a technique which detects changes in the center of gravity of the body. Provides information about the principles and application, construction of apparatus, operating routines, and use of the computer as a recorder. Includes suggested investigations, demonstrations, and diagrams.…
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Biology, Blood Circulation, Body Weight
Peer reviewedHolbrook, Hilary Taylor – Writing Center Journal, 1989
Reprints an article originally appearing in "English Education" (v20 n2; May 1988; See EJ370079). Addresses problems currently faced by writing labs: training staff; incorporating usable word processing; and establishing working relationships with both academic and nonacademic communities. (JAD)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Content Area Writing, Higher Education, On the Job Training
Peer reviewedGilbert, George L., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1990
Presented are three demonstrations: "The Construction and Use of Commercial Voltaic Cell Displays in Freshman Chemistry"; Dramatizing Isotopes: Deuterated Ice Cubes Sink"; and "A Simple Apparatus to Demonstrate Differing Gas Diffusion Rates (Graham's Law)." Materials, procedures, and safety considerations are discussed. (CW)
Descriptors: Atomic Structure, Chemistry, College Science, Demonstrations (Educational)
Peer reviewedGratz, Ronald K. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1990
Described is a method of teaching laboratory report writing to undergraduate students. The sections of student lab reports are reviewed and compared with scientific papers. The writing process including drafts and peer review is discussed. Results of the use of this method are provided. (CW)
Descriptors: College Science, Content Area Writing, Higher Education, Laboratory Procedures
Peer reviewedHanif, Muhammad – Science and Children, 1990
Directions for the construction of a model bog habitat are provided including examples of plants and animals which may be suitable. Activities that use this model are suggested. Background information on the ecology and chemistry of the bog is included. (CW)
