Humphreys, Lloyd G.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1985
Since early research had shown that a total score on 27 Piagetian tasks was very highly correlated with a Wechsler and achievement composite, a study investigated the possibility of shortening the Piagetian test by means of classical analysis methodology. (HOD)

Blaxall, Janet; Willows, Dale M. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1984
This study assessed the influence of reading ability and difficulty of material on types of oral reading errors made by 42 second-grade children. Overall, types of errors changed as the material became more difficult. The interactions between reading ability and difficulty level were also significant. (Author/BS)

Kaufman, Alan S.; Kamphaus, Randy W. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1984
The construct validity of the Sequential Processing, Simultaneous Processing and Achievement scales of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children was supported by factor-analytic investigations of a representative national stratified sample of 2,000 children. Correlations provided insight into the relationship of sequential/simultaneous…

Balajthy, Ernest – Journal of Reading, 1985
Discusses how computers can "converse" with students for teaching purposes, demonstrates how these interactions are becoming more complex, and explains how the computer's role is becoming more "human" in giving intelligent responses to students. (HOD)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Processes, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Software
McGrath, Diane – Electronic Learning, 1984
Discusses computer assisted instruction (CAI) from perspective of artificial intelligence researchers and describes program features of intelligent computer assisted instruction (ICAI) that researchers feel will improve on deficiencies of CAI. Program descriptions and sample interactions from several tutorial and expert system ICAI programs are…

Fagan, Joseph F., III – Intelligence, 1984
Children (n=36), originally tested for visual novelty preferences at age seven months and intelligence estimates at age three, were tested for intellectual functioning and for visual recognition performance at age five. Results indicate that novelty preferences were more highly related to later intelligence quotients than to later recognition…

Snyder, Frederick R.; Butter, Eliot J. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1985
The Auditory Cognitive Style Task (ACST) and an IQ measure were administered to 64 good and poor readers in the first and third grades. ACST results indicated that poor readers: (1) committed significantly more errors; (2) had shorter response latencies; and (3) demonstrated inefficient strategies for successful performance. (Author/BS)

Dede, Christopher; Adams, Alda – PTA Today, 1984
The technological changes that are constantly occurring may indicate a need for a new definition of intelligence. Changes in the workplace require a higher level of thinking skills. Suggestions for creating a learning environment that encourages analysis, synthesis, and evaluation are offered. (DF)

O'Connor, Mary J.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1984
Examined the relationship between responsiveness to auditory novelty in full-term and preterm infants and subsequent intellectual performance at five years of age. Results suggest that measures of early perceptual-memory development may reflect early cognitive processes necessary for later intellectual performance. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Heart Rate, Infants, Intelligence Quotient
Metzger, Norman – Mosaic, 1984
Discusses Japanese endeavors to create a new generation of computers endowed with intelligence, and the U.S. and European responses to these endeavors. Major U.S. efforts have been through private industry and the Defense Advanced Research Agency, while the National Science Foundation has increased support for developing advanced scientific…

McQueen, Richard – Educational Leadership, 1984
Herman Epstein's theory correlating children's learning capacity with periodic spurts and plateaus in brain growth is predicated on inadequate data and questionable interpretations thereof, and it is discredited by highly respected scholars, including those he cites.
