Peer reviewedDochy, Filip; Segers, Mien; Van den Bossche, Piet; Gijbels, David – Learning and Instruction, 2003
Studied the main effects of problem-based learning on knowledge and skills and explored potential moderators of the effect of problem-based learning in a meta-analysis of 43 articles. Findings show a robust positive effect on skills, but a tendency to a negative effect, strongly influenced by two studies, on student knowledge. (SLD)
Descriptors: Knowledge Level, Meta Analysis, Problem Based Learning, Skills
Peer reviewedReese Robert J.; Kieffer, Kevin M.; Briggs, Barbara K. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2002
Conducted a reliability generalization study of five of the most prominent adult attachment style measures. Results from this investigation of 154 previously published stories indicate that the average score reliabilities across studied varied considerably across instruments and subscales. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adults, Attachment Behavior, Generalization, Meta Analysis
Peer reviewedHenson, Robin K.; Hwang, Dae-Yeop – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2002
Conducted a reliability generalization study of Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (LSI; D. Kolb, 1976). Results for 34 studies indicate that internal consistency and test-retest reliabilities for LSI scores fluctuate considerably and contribute to deleterious cumulative measurement error. (SLD)
Descriptors: Error of Measurement, Generalization, Meta Analysis, Reliability
Peer reviewedDimitrov, Dimiter M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2002
Discusses reliability issues in light of recent studies and debates focused on psychometrics versus datametrics terminology and reliabilities generalization. Discusses the way multiple perspectives on score reliability may affect research practice, editorial policies, and reliability generalization across studies. (SLD)
Descriptors: Generalization, Meta Analysis, Psychometrics, Reliability
Peer reviewedPratt, Travis C. – Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, 2002
While meta-analyses of the correctional treatment literature have made significant contributions to understanding "what works" with offenders, they have been the subject of considerable scholarly criticism. This article discusses these critiques by revisiting Gottfredson's (1979) discussion of "treatment destruction techniques," and argues that…

Peer reviewedBurns, Matthew K.; Symington, Todd – Journal of School Psychology, 2002
Although prereferral intervention teams (PIT) are common in public schools, there is little and conflicting research to support them. The current article conducted an empirical meta-analysis of research on PITs by reviewing 72 articles. Results revealed a mean effect size of 1.15 for student outcomes and 0.90 for systemic outcomes. Implications…
Descriptors: Effect Size, Intervention, Meta Analysis, Models
Peer reviewedKanetkar, Vinay; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1995
The impact of scaling changes on the size of conditional relationships in meta-analysis is explored by examining a number of parameters. The most nearly appropriate parameters for researchers to aggregate appear to be unstandardized regression coefficients or partial correlation coefficients. (SLD)
Descriptors: Change, Correlation, Meta Analysis, Models
Peer reviewedMetsala, Jamie L.; Brown, Gordon D. A.; Stanovich, Keith E. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1998
Presents a meta-analysis of spelling-to-sound regularity effects in individuals with reading disabilities and reading-level comparison groups. The clear effect of word regularity for individuals with reading disabilities, which did not differ from the word regularity effects for individuals at reading levels, is discussed relative to classic…
Descriptors: Meta Analysis, Phonology, Reading Difficulties, Spelling
Peer reviewedSchafer, William D. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1999
Meta-analysis is a methodology that can be used to summarize the results of quantitative studies and allows a researcher to evaluate how the outcomes may vary systematically. (Author)
Descriptors: Coding, Data Analysis, Data Collection, Meta Analysis
Peer reviewedHouse, Ernest R.; Howe, Kenneth R. – New Directions for Evaluation, 2000
Presents a framework for judging evaluations on the basis of their potential for democratic deliberation that includes the interrelated requirements of inclusion, dialogue, and deliberation. Operationalizes these requirements in 10 questions to guide evaluation and meta-evaluation from a democratic viewpoint. (SLD)
Descriptors: Democracy, Evaluation Methods, Meta Analysis, Models
Peer reviewedMeyer, Gregory J. – Psychological Assessment, 1997
In reply to criticism of the Rorschach Comprehensive System (CS) by J. Wood, M. Nezworski, and W. Stejskal (1996), this article presents a meta-analysis of published data indicating that the CS has excellent chance-corrected interrater reliability. It is noted that the erroneous assumptions of Wood et al. make their assertions about validity…
Descriptors: Interrater Reliability, Meta Analysis, Test Use, Test Validity
Peer reviewedWood, James M.; Nezworski, M. Teresa; Stejskal, William J. – Psychological Assessment, 1997
G. Meyer (1997) attempts to refute the present authors' criticisms of the interrater reliability of the Rorschach Comprehensive System (CS) but misrepresents their position and offers a flawed meta-analysis in support of his own. Rorschach proponents need to undertake high-quality replicated studies of CS reliability and validity. (SLD)
Descriptors: Interrater Reliability, Meta Analysis, Test Use, Test Validity
Peer reviewedMeyer, Gregory J. – Psychological Assessment, 1997
Replies to Wood et al. and documents limitations of their conclusions about the Rorschach Comprehensive System (CS), supporting Meyer's own meta-analysis, which finds adequate interrater reliability for the CS. (SLD)
Descriptors: Interrater Reliability, Meta Analysis, Test Use, Test Validity
Peer reviewedRoberts, Ian – Evaluation and Research in Education, 2000
Conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials of the administration of human albumin in critically ill patients. Findings raised serious concerns about the safety of an intervention that has been widely used in health care around the world. Findings illustrate the importance of systematic reviews in health care and other areas of…
Descriptors: Evaluation Methods, Medical Services, Meta Analysis, Patients
Peer reviewedRupinski, Melvin T.; Dunlap, William P. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1996
The use of Monte Carlo methods demonstrated that a formula presented by M. G. Kendall for estimating Pearson's rho from tau is somewhat more accurate than a formula presented by K. Pearson for estimating Pearson's rho from a Spearman's rho coefficient. Implications for meta-analysis of correlations are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Correlation, Estimation (Mathematics), Meta Analysis, Monte Carlo Methods
